About The Position

Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI) and senior staff, assist with the operation of the Hawaii Health Data Warehouse (HHDW). HHDW is a partnership between the Hawaii Department of Health’s (DOH) Chronic Disease Prevention & Health Promotion Division (CDPHPD) and the Department of Public Health Sciences. Its purpose is to collect, manage, and disseminate public health data in a user-friendly format, and to assess and monitor Hawaii’s progress towards state and national targets. The role involves supporting website and social media content, HHDW webinar and training activities, data tracker and dashboard development, website usage tracking, newsletter dissemination, data translation for various audiences, presentation material development, data validation processes, and abstract and report writing.

Requirements

  • Classified degree-seeking student in a Masters or PhD program in Social Work, Public Health, Education, or related field under UH Graduate Division
  • Be in good academic standing and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Maintain 6 credits per semester with the exception of those who have reached 800 (dissertation) or 700F (thesis)
  • Experience with data presentation and data visualization
  • Experience using design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Piktochart, or related software to create social media posts, website graphics, infographics, or reports
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Detail oriented and organized
  • Must be responsible, dependable, and efficient

Nice To Haves

  • Classified University of Hawaii Public Health student
  • A doctoral student at the University of Hawaii
  • Experience with creating professional social media posts and newsletters (LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, MailChimp, Tweetdeck and/or similar social media content management)
  • Experience creating and/or editing videos (Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, Movavi, iMovie, or similar)
  • Knowledge of public health, epidemiology, or statistics as evidenced by coursework and/or experience
  • Experience in working with vital statistics and/or survey data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), Youth Tobacco Survey (YTS), the Pregnancy Risk Assessment and Monitoring Survey (PRAMS) or other similar surveys
  • Familiar with Healthy People 2030
  • Experience with Google Analytics to monitor website usage metrics

Responsibilities

  • Design and create new posts for websites and social media, and update existing website content including featured content and data release announcements
  • Support HHDW webinar and training activities, including video editing and monitoring Q&A sessions
  • Contribute to the development of data trackers and customized dashboards
  • Track website usage, activity, and metrics
  • Assist with the writing and formatting of the HHDW e-newsletter
  • Translate data for multiple audiences, summarizing data trends, and synthesizing key data points
  • Participate in website usability testing
  • Assist in developing presentation and training materials for local, national, and international meetings, conferences, and trainings
  • Participate in data validation processes to maintain data standards and protocols, including testing and reviewing new data loads, reviewing data from national websites, reviewing data for data requests, maintaining data documentation and code books, preparing content maps of indicators, aligning content and language for consistency, creating summaries for health indicators
  • Support abstract and report writing, including technical reports such as annual progress reports, legislative reports, or data-specific reports
  • Other duties as assigned
