About The Position

The Graduate Research Appointment (GRA) is a post-baccalaureate appointment for participants with an interest in biomedical research. The primary purpose is to provide a post-baccalaureate laboratory research experience that applies skills in science, technology, engineering or math to biomedical research including basic science or translational research. GRA participants will have the opportunity to participate in selected graduate classes and seminars while working in this role. This is a limited tenure position that has been approved for one year that may have the possibility of a one-year extension. This vacancy is not eligible for sponsorship, and Mayo Clinic does not sponsor or transfer visas for this position. Also, Mayo Clinic does not participate in the F-1 STEM OPT extension program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with a strong background in science, technology, engineering, or math.
  • Prior hands-on research experience in a biomedical laboratory, including experience with mammalian cell culture.
  • Highly reliable, detail-oriented, organized, and able to follow established laboratory procedures and supervisory direction carefully and consistently.
  • Strong organizational skills, good follow-through, and the ability to plan and prioritize daily experimental activities.
  • Strong scientific documentation and communication skills.
  • Receptive to feedback, able to incorporate instructions into subsequent work, and comfortable asking for clarification or assistance when needed.
  • Flexibility and a team-oriented attitude.
  • Authorization to work and remain in the United States, without necessity for Mayo Clinic sponsorship now, or in the future (e.g., be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident, refugee or asylee). Students that do not meet these criteria do not qualify.
  • Applicants who are currently in Graduate or Medical School are not eligible.
  • Eligibility of applicants with advanced degrees above BA or BS depend on the specific degree.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with immune cell isolation and culture, T-cell or Treg culture, lentiviral production/transduction, flow cytometry, and/or other cell-based assays.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a post-baccalaureate laboratory research experience applying skills in science, technology, engineering, or math to biomedical research.
  • Participate in selected graduate classes and seminars.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate laboratory notebooks.
  • Document experimental procedures and results.
  • Develop or update laboratory protocols.
  • Organize experimental data.
  • Contribute to scientific presentations and manuscripts.
  • Assist with shared laboratory responsibilities such as maintaining organized workspaces, managing supplies and incoming packages, and supporting other laboratory activities as priorities arise.
