About The Position

UPMC Shadyside is hiring Graduate Nurses as full-time Professional Staff Nurses. This is an opportunity for current student nurses graduating in Fall 2026, Spring 2027, or Summer 2027 to secure a role up to a year prior to graduation. UPMC Shadyside is a 520-bed tertiary care facility with Magnet Status and serves as an academic teaching hospital. The role involves providing highly competent patient care and treatment while demonstrating empathy and a passion for learning. It requires independent judgment, fluent communication, and partnership with physicians, other care providers, patients, and their families to achieve desired patient outcomes. As a member of the care delivery team, the Professional Staff Nurse sets the standards for the level and quality of nursing care and possesses authority and accountability for its provision, exemplifying a commitment to the community and the nursing profession.

Requirements

  • Current student nurse graduating in Fall 2026, Spring 2027, or Summer 2027.
  • Eligible for State Board Licensure and successfully pass the examination before beginning this role OR must have a Temporary Practice Permit and commit to taking the NCLEX examination within SIX months of hire.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills needed to provide care and interact with all ages of patients.
  • Understand the principles of growth and development over the lifespan.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) or TPP (Temporary Practice Permit).
  • Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state.
  • Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
  • Graduate nurses must complete licensure examination within SIX MONTHS of hire within one year of graduation, whichever comes first.
  • UPMC requires that GNs take licensure examination within 6 months of their start date or they will be terminated or demoted from the GN position, at the discretion of the BU.
