About The Position

Writing consultants play an important role in writing education at Duquesne. They meet individually or in small groups with students to help them with writing from all stages of their writing processes, from brainstorming to revision. Writing consultants provide advice and suggestions for a range of writing tasks and concerns, from developing thesis statements to citing and integrating sources. The Writing Center offers a teaching, not a proofreading service. Our goal is to teach writers how to improve rather than to edit for them. The ESL (English as a Second Language) writing consultant is the “go to” consultant for non-native speakers of English, though also works with the full range of students who visit the Writing Center. Tutoring hours are based on the consultant’s availability and the Writing Center’s coverage needs.

Requirements

Must be a full-time student in a for-credit degree program.
Cannot be concurrently working another job at Duquesne.
Must submit an online application form.
Must submit a résumé/cv.
Must submit an academic research-based writing sample.
Must combine résumé/cv and writing sample into one PDF file to upload with the application.

Nice To Haves

Experience working with ESL writers is desirable but not required.
Tutoring or teaching experience, particularly of writing, is likewise desirable.

Responsibilities

Meet individually or in small groups with students to help them with writing from all stages of their writing processes, from brainstorming to revision.

Work with the full range of students who visit the Writing Center.
Log in and out at the beginning and end of shifts using time management software Kronos UKG.
