About The Position

Counseling Services at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) is seeking a dedicated and passionate Graduate Assistant for Mental Health Outreach to work 20 hours per week for the upcoming academic year. The selected candidate will work closely with the Program Director for Outreach and Community Relations and the Administrative Assistant 4 – Outreach Support Specialist to promote mental health awareness, prevention, and connection to care across campus. This position offers a valuable opportunity for a graduate student in a mental health-related field (e.g., Clinical Psychology, Counseling and Educational Psychology, Social Work, Community Health Sciences, Public Health) to gain hands-on experience in outreach, peer education, and mental health promotion within a university counseling center.

Requirements

• Available to work 20 hours a week, between 9am-4pm on weekdays.
• Available to accept some scheduling flexibility during key periods
• Must be admitted to a degree-granting program and maintain good academic standing with an overall GPA of at least 3.0.
• Must be continuously enrolled in at least 6 graduate-level credits (600-700 level) throughout the assistantship.
• Confident in public speaking with excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Proficient in software tools such as Zoom, Canva, and PowerPoint.
• Proficiency with Canva, and social media platforms.
• Ability to complete tasks with creativity, independence, and initiative, while maintaining accountability to report to the supervisor regularly.
• Ability to professionally represent Counseling Services through effective communication and collaboration within the center, the Student Services Division, the university community, and the public.

Responsibilities

• Offer direct mental health support by facilitating one-on-one Let’s Talk drop-in consultation sessions and meet with students to provide support, advice, psychoeducation, provide connections to appropriate resources for ongoing support.
• Collaborate in the development, planning, and execution of mental health outreach and prevention programming aligned with Counseling Services mission and scope of practice.
• Actively work to educate the campus community about mental health topics and Counseling Services resources through events, presentations, marketing campaigns, and awareness initiatives.
• Create engaging and informative materials for social media, marketing, and promotion ensuring the content is accessible, visually engaging, accurate, and aligned with Counseling Services and University messaging and branding.
• Co-supervise and facilitate the HOWL Peer Educator program, following NASPA Certified Peer Educator training model and assist with recruitment, training, onboarding, mentorship, and evaluation of peer educators.
• Help to foster a warm and friendly environment at the Annex by initiating conversations with students, making thoughtful efforts to engage individuals who may be hesitant or reserved, and intentionally ensuring that all students who utilize the space are informed about available resources and services.
• Assist with office duties and light cleaning as assigned.
• Perform other outreach and engagement duties as assigned.
