About The Position

This is a live-in position responsible for maintaining a community environment within residence halls and promoting and enhancing students’ social, educational, and personal development. Responsible for articulating the philosophy and policies of the department and university. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to Residence Director.

Requirements

• The minimum education required for admittance as a graduate student at Stephen F. Austin State University.
• Must be in good standing with a minimum 3.0 GPA throughout period of employment.
• Physical condition adequate to permit full performance of duties, including but not limited to the ability to detect smoke and other odors indicative of hall violations and hazardous situations and to climb stairs in order to reach the top floor of a residence hall in an emergency situation without assistance.
• Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, departmental and university policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of student development theory, techniques, and research associated with ensuring the success of various student populations.
• Skill in the use of standard office equipment and software.
• Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment in making decisions.
• Ability to diffuse and respond effectively to situations involving intense pressures and/or unpredictable persons.
• Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
• Ability to provide support for student development with a demonstrable concern for students.
• Ability to engage students and to create and enhance their connection to the institution and each other.
• Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.
• Ability to train and supervise others.
• Ability to live and work on campus in order to respond to the needs of the department 24 hours per day.
• Ability to observe and detect unusual occurrences and policy violations.
• A student must have clear or provisional admission to the graduate school and the academic unit, be in good academic standing, and be enrolled for at least six semester credit hours (SCH) of graduate courses to be eligible for a graduate assistantship during the fall or spring semesters.
• To be eligible for a graduate assistantship during the summer, a student must be enrolled for at least three semester credit hours (SCH) of graduate courses.
• Graduate assistants may not hold any other type of position such as a student assistant, staff employee or adjunct faculty at the same time that they are employed as a graduate assistant.
• All graduate assistant appointments combined should not exceed the maximum FTE of 0.50.

Nice To Haves

• The recommendation of a faculty member may be required.
• No direct experience is required. Training and instruction will be provided.
• Two or more years of prior experience living and working in a residence hall or similar group living environment is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Interacts with students in assigned residence halls during duty and non-duty hours.
• Acts as a referral agent for students and staff to different campus and community resources.
• Assesses resident needs and coordinates with various university departments to meet their needs.
• Actively and collaboratively maintains a community environment that promotes respect, growth, academic success, and compassion.
• Maintains confidentiality of information as appropriate.
• Oversees the development and implementation of staff and student programming.
• Identifies potential hall leaders and directs their involvement at the floor and hall levels; facilitates their development.
• Responds to and communicates effectively in all emergency and/or life-threatening situations.
• Actively and appropriately addresses and documents all student conduct concerns.
• Ensures building security and safety.
• Prepares paperwork for and conducts student judicial hearings.
• Works closely with departmental maintenance and custodial staff to ensure a well-maintained environment and identifies facilities in need of repair or special attention.
• Coordinates periodic room inspections and proper check-in and check-out of residents.
• Assists in recruiting, selecting, training, supervising, and evaluating student staff members.
• Supports and recruits for Residence Hall Association (RHA), Hall Council, and Honor Council meetings.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

• Monthly stipend of $1,100 per month.
• On-campus furnished apartment including utilities, washer & dryer, and high-speed internet access; pets are allowed according to policy.
• Tuition and fee scholarship (in-state rate) of up to $10,000 to cover up to 9 hours per fall and spring semesters.
• Student meal plan scholarship (approximately $1,500 per semester, fall and spring semesters).
