About The Position

This is a temporary 11-month position at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, Library Services Department, Hawaiian and Pacific Collections Department, Hamilton Library. The position is created specifically to support the Ka ' ohipohaku project, funded by the Mellon Foundation. The role involves research into social media archiving practices, organizing meetings, conducting outreach to gather insights for a social media archive, assisting with project reports, and preparing periodic updates and presentations. The position is renewable annually for the duration of the grant, contingent upon funding, operational needs, satisfactory performance, and good academic standing. The position is part-time at 50% FTE.

Requirements

  • Enrolled full-time in a graduate degree program at a University of Hawai'i campus at the time of hire and throughout the appointment period, be in good academic standing, and maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 or above.
  • Pursuing a graduate degree in Library & Information Science, Hawaiian Studies, or Hawaiian Language.
  • Strong interest in learning or honing research and analytical skills, including research, evaluation, survey, and protocol design.
  • Strong organizational, writing, communication, and interpersonal skills. Keen attention to detail and ability to synthesize information.
  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn web archiving tools and technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and community members.
  • Demonstrated experience in Google applications and related software.
  • Working knowledge of social media platforms, including Instagram and Facebook.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Hawaiian Studies, Hawaiian Language, Ethnic Studies, or Political Science.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Native Hawaiian culture and history.
  • Experience with community consultation, oral history, or participatory research methods in Hawai'i.
  • Successful completion of LIS 655: Digital Archives or demonstrated knowledge of digital preservation.

Responsibilities

  • Research current social media archiving practices and models.
  • Schedule, organize and support meetings and consultations including preparing materials, coordinating logistics, and documenting discussion notes and action items.
  • Conduct outreach and facilitate consultations with individuals and organizations involved in social and environmental movements in Hawai'i to gather insights, document input, and integrate findings into the planning and development of a social media archive.
  • Assist with writing the final project report by synthesizing research findings and community consultation input.
  • Prepare periodic updates, presentations, and project reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.
