About The Position

The College of Engineering (CoE) Graduate Advising Office seeks a dynamic and committed professional to join the team as a graduate advisor for prospective and current students. CoE graduate advisors engage students in decision making processes to promote student success, retention, and program completion. They maintain appropriate confidentiality, update graduate student records and manage the admission process for assigned graduate programs. Additionally, graduate advisors work closely with graduate faculty and CoE Department staff to ensure the successful administration of the graduate programs. Central to their position, a graduate advisor strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive environment. The graduate student services team is part of CoE's academic affairs unit, a diverse and vibrant organization that includes academic advising, career services, undergraduate learning center, student engagement and leadership, scholarships, and student wellness. This position works in-person on campus and is eligible for one remote day per week after 6 months of onboarding and training are complete. This position is required to occasionally support programming during evenings and weekends.

Requirements

  • Required at least one year of experience post-bachelor’s degree in one of the following: Student services experience in higher education or secondary education working with students in engineering, math, physical/biological/natural/social sciences or related field
  • Teaching experience in engineering, math, physical/biological/natural/social sciences or related field
  • Professional experience in engineering or engineering related field
  • Experience working on a team to develop, implement and deliver services or programming
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and effectively within and for a diverse community in a responsive, sensitive and caring manner
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professionalism in communicating with faculty, staff, students, visiting students and families, and the general public
  • Excellent written, verbal and problem-solving skills
  • Proven commitment to increasing access in science, technology and engineering and the ability to work with diverse student populations

Responsibilities

  • Manages application and admissions process to graduate programs, serving as the initial reviewing admissions officer and communicating with applicants regarding status of application
  • Provides information and resources about educational options and graduate school academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options and refers students to appropriate institutional resources
  • Works to support the idea of engineering for all in advising practices and procedures; supports and enhances a climate of inclusive excellence for students and colleagues
  • Serves as the primary resource for graduate applicants ,current students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders of an academic program
  • Participates in the campus-wide advising community, graduate community, etc. providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college
  • Provides guidance and/or develops policy and procedure recommendations and/or changes related to graduate programs
  • Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
  • Maintains compliance with graduate program(s), school/college, and university requirements and technology systems related to admissions, assessment, academic degree progress/requirements, and program review
  • Monitors degree progress and assists students in navigating resources and systems throughout the student lifecycle from matriculation to degree completion
  • Provides in-depth advising services promoting graduate student success, retention, and degree completion.
  • Advises graduate students on programs, curriculum, graduate education, and university policies, processes, and procedures
