About The Position

The Golf Course Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, repair, service and preventative maintenance of all golf course equipment related machinery. This includes reel and rotary mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, golf carts, sprayers, small engines, tow behind equipment, backhoes, loaders and other turf and grounds maintenance equipment used in the day to day operation of the golf course. The role is essential to ensure all equipment is safe, reliable and operating at a standard that supports high quality course conditions and efficient operations. This reflects the scope commonly used in Ontario and aligns with the province’s Turf Equipment Technician trade, which specifically covers mowing equipment, golf carts, traction units, sprayers, small powered equipment and tow behind equipment.

Requirements

  • Valid and current Ontario Drivers License
  • Experience as a mechanic working turf equipment, agricultural equipment, construction equipment, heavy equipment or similar outdoor power equipment
  • Strong working knowledge of gas, diesel, hydraulic and electrical systems
  • Ability to diagnose equipment issues independently and complete both minor and major repairs
  • Ability to work independently, stay organized and communicate effectively and professionally with the Superintendent and the golf team
  • Physically able to lift parts and tools, work in a shop environment and perform outdoor repairs in varying weather conditions

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with reel set up, grinding, sharpening and adjustment is strongly preferred
  • Welding and fabrication skills are an asset
  • Experience working in a golf course environment an asset
  • Familiarity with seasonal golf course demands and the importance of cut quality and equipment availability
  • Turf Technician certification an asset
  • Knowledge of safe shop practices, WHMIS and Ontario Workplace Safety requirements

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, diagnose, service and repair gasoline, diesel, electric and hydraulic golf course equipment and maintenance vehicles
  • Perform daily, weekly, monthly and seasonal preventative maintenance on the full equipment fleet
  • Set, adjust, sharpen and maintain reels, bed knives and rotary blades to support proper quality of cut and turf health.
  • Maintain and repair fairway mowers, rough mowers, green mowers, trim units, tractors, utility carts, aerators, spreaders, sprayers, small engines and other turf equipment.
  • Maintain and repair heavier support equipment used on the property including backhoes, loaders, trailers and related ground equipment
  • Overhaul and repair engines, brakes, transmissions, steering, drive systems, electrical components and hydraulic systems as required.
  • Trouble shoot mechanical, hydraulic and electrical issues quickly to reduce downtime during golf season
  • Maintain accurate service records, maintenance logs, parts usage, warranty information and repair history for all equipment.
  • Manage shop inventory, order parts and supplies, help evaluate repair versus replacement decisions for the fleet.
  • Keep the shop clean, organized , safe and ensure tools, materials and work areas meet Ontario Health & Safety Standards and also in compliance with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Work closely with the Superintendent to prioritize repairs, plan seasonal readiness and support efficient daily course set up and operations
  • Assist with training golf course staff on safe operation, cleaning and basic daily care of equipment.
  • Support spring start up and winterization of all turf equipment and maintenance assets
  • Respond to urgent breakdowns during the operating season including early mornings, occasional weekends and in season peak periods as required
