About The Position

Under supervision of the Director of Golf Operations, directs operation, maintenance, and upkeep of golf course owned by City of St. George. This is a managerial position involving supervisory responsibilities; advanced technical knowledge in golf course design, construction, and maintenance; and budget management experience.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of post high school training in subject related to golf course maintenance such as plant sciences, agronomy, horticulture, botany, or related field. Experience may be substituted for training on a year-for-year basis.
  • 9 or 18 hole course: Minimum of five (5) years full time progressively responsible experience in golf course maintenance, of which three (3) years must have been in lead person capacity.
  • Experience must include lead maintenance responsibilities in a climate that requires annual over-seeding.
  • 27 hole course: All requirements of 18 hole superintendent, plus minimum of two (2) years full time paid experience as 18 hole superintendent.
  • Must possess a valid driver license. A valid Utah Driver License must be obtained within 60 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment.
  • Possess a valid Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicator License. A valid Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicator License must be obtained within 60 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment.
  • Knowledge of methods, equipment, and materials used in developing and maintaining a golf course.
  • Working knowledge of budget preparation and related accounting procedures.
  • Knowledge and understanding of soils, irrigation systems, plant pathology, plant fertility, and drainage systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of the fall and spring Over-seeding process.
  • Rules and etiquette of the game of golf.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with elected officials, department heads, employees, the public, and officials and employees of other jurisdictions.

Nice To Haves

  • College Degree in Turf Grass Management Preferred.
  • Member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) within 6 months of hire date.

Responsibilities

  • Directs and manages operations of designated City golf course, assigns priority of major projects, estimates time and materials required, and coordinates with other City departments or outside agencies as needed.
  • Supervises and evaluates assigned staff. Recruits and hires full time, part-time and seasonal staff.
  • Responsible for planning and implementing programs to ensure proper care of golf course, i.e., manicuring, fertilizing, watering, seeding, sodding, etc.
  • Set up, use, and adjust computerized irrigation system.
  • Participates in budget preparation and ensures correct administration of budget for course; reviews specifications for equipment, supplies, and materials used; and authorizes purchases as required.
  • Ensures that equipment, supplies, and materials are properly maintained and safely operated.
  • Develops and carries out long range golf course improvement programs that will provide time related objectives for major course improvements, in conjunction with City Operations Director and Director of Golf Operations.
  • Responsible for update reports, oral and in writing, regarding golf course progress and problems.
  • Attends meetings and/or hearings as required.
  • Analyzes turf grass disease, insect, and other turf grass stress problems. Selects appropriate fungicides, pesticides, or alternative measures to resolve problems. Applies appropriate remedial measures in full compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Responsible for occupational safety and health training of supervised employees.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
