About The Position

This role is for a Gluer Machine Apprentice on the 1st Shift, working 5 days a week for 8 hours a day. All team members at Southern Champion Tray (SCT) are expected to act in accordance with the company's Core Values and Operating Principles. The primary responsibility is to learn the skills necessary to safely and successfully set up and operate the folder/gluer machine according to the apprentice training plan and learning objectives. The apprentice will partner with an assigned trainer to learn the job responsibilities and work towards achieving proficiency in critical tasks, ensuring high-quality packaging and products are produced at a consistent rate of speed in line with machine standards and production goals.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Minimum of three months related experience and/or training
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to learn and utilize computer software

  • Troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to read and understand documents, letters, etc.
  • Ability to write legibly in English
  • Ability to understand and speak clearly, communicate, and understand directions in English as needed

Responsibilities

  • Learn the responsibilities necessary to safely and successfully set up and operate the folder/gluer machine in accordance with the apprentice training plan and learning objectives.
  • Partner with assigned trainer to learn job responsibilities and work towards achieving a standard level of proficiency for critical tasks.
  • Ensure high-quality packaging and products are produced at a consistent rate of speed in accordance with machine standards and production goals.
  • Receive instruction from trainer and perform duties necessary to reach a standard level of proficiency in the critical responsibilities of the Operator position within the timeframes outlined in the apprenticeship training plan.
  • Develop knowledge and skill required to operate the machine safely and consistently, while maintaining standard operating procedures.
  • Advise Supervisor or trainer of any information regarding safety or performance issues with the machine or machine crew.
  • Learn to safely and efficiently start up and stop the machine and make machine adjustments to maintain production and quality standards within target speeds.
  • Learn procedures specific to different types of products produced, including precise measurements and alignments necessary within the allotted time frame specific to the job.
  • Study and learn all SCT Quality procedures and standards, including required quality checks and procedures, and various customer specifications and quality standards.
  • Actively work with the crew to ensure product quality meets all standards and customer specifications with regard to folding, gluing, packaging, labeling, and stacking.
  • Identify scrap defects and notify Trainer or Supervisor of any discrepancies or areas of concern.
  • Review previous shift's report to determine job status, issues with a job or equipment, and production schedule.
  • Log productivity and provide comments for each production job in the manufacturing computer system.
  • Accurately complete production reports and record production data.
  • Set up and use various scanners as needed.
  • Regularly observe and assist feeder packers on the gluing line to ensure cases are packed to customer specifications, including proper count and placement.
  • Assist with providing instruction and guide activities of feeder packers when necessary.
  • Learn to troubleshoot and resolve various issues encountered when running different styles of products or substrates.
  • Develop skills to diagnose and assist in minor repairs or resolve machine malfunctions.
  • Review and fully understand all preventative maintenance responsibilities of an operator.
  • Learn proper procedures to perform routine cleaning and preventative maintenance to be performed by operators.
  • Ensure that finished products with defects are properly scrapped and discarded while consistently following procedures to minimize waste.
  • Communicate effectively with other team members throughout the shift and at shift change to share critical information necessary to perform the job safely and efficiently.
  • Collaborate regularly with Quality Technicians/Supervisor to obtain necessary approvals and to ensure quality standards are consistently met.
  • Actively seek and adopt new updates and improvements to processes, new procedures, and innovations that would add to the efficiency and safety of the operation.
  • Develop knowledge and skill necessary to successfully produce product in a manner that safely keeps downtime to a minimum.
  • Maintain a clean work environment in accordance with Food Safety and 5S program.
  • Follow all safety-related policies, rules, regulations, technical instructions, and guidelines.
  • Use situational awareness and actively look for weak signals to identify unsafe behaviors and conditions.
  • Consistently wear appropriate PPE for the task at hand and within the assigned area.
  • Assist other departments or positions with duties as assigned.
