About The Position

This role is for a Gluer Machine Apprentice on the Night Shift, working a 3-day, 12-hour schedule. All team members at Southern Champion Tray (SCT) are expected to act in accordance with the company's shared Core Values and Operating Principles. The primary responsibility is to learn the tasks necessary to safely and successfully set up and operate the folder/gluer machine according to the apprentice training plan and learning objectives. The apprentice will partner with an assigned trainer to gain proficiency in critical tasks, ensuring high-quality packaging and products are produced at consistent speeds and in line with production goals.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Minimum of three months related experience and/or training.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn and utilize computer software.
  • Mechanical ability and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to read and understand documents, letters, etc. in English.
  • Ability to write legibly in English.
  • Ability to understand and speak clearly, communicate, and understand directions in English.
  • Flexibility to move to one of the off shifts (evening) upon successful completion of the training program.

Responsibilities

  • Learn to safely and successfully set up and operate the folder/gluer machine in accordance with the apprentice training plan and learning objectives.
  • Partner with assigned trainer to learn job responsibilities and achieve a standard level of proficiency in critical tasks.
  • Ensure high-quality packaging and products are produced at a consistent rate of speed in accordance with machine standards and production goals.
  • Receive instruction and perform duties to reach proficiency in operator position responsibilities within training plan timeframes.
  • Develop knowledge and skill to operate the machine safely and consistently, adhering to standard operating procedures.
  • Advise Supervisor or trainer of any safety or performance issues with the machine or machine crew.
  • Learn to safely and efficiently start up and stop the machine and make adjustments to maintain production and quality standards.
  • Learn procedures specific to different product types, including precise measurements and alignments.
  • Study and learn all SCT Quality procedures and standards, including customer specifications.
  • Actively work with the crew to ensure product quality meets all standards and customer specifications for folding, gluing, packaging, labeling, and stacking.
  • Identify scrap defects and notify Trainer or Supervisor of any discrepancies.
  • Review previous shift's report to determine job status, issues, and production schedule.
  • Log productivity and provide comments for each production job in the manufacturing computer system.
  • Accurately complete production reports and record production data.
  • Set up and use various scanners as needed.
  • Observe and assist feeder packers on the gluing line to ensure cases are packed to customer specifications.
  • Assist with providing instruction and guide activities of feeder packers when necessary.
  • Learn to troubleshoot and resolve various issues encountered when running different product styles or substrates.
  • Develop skills to diagnose and assist in minor repairs or resolve machine malfunctions.
  • Review and understand all preventative maintenance responsibilities of an operator.
  • Learn proper procedures to perform routine cleaning and preventative maintenance.
  • Ensure finished products with defects are properly scrapped and discarded, minimizing waste.
  • Communicate effectively with other team members throughout the shift and at shift change.
  • Collaborate with Quality Technicians/Supervisor to obtain necessary approvals and ensure quality standards are met.
  • Actively seek and adopt new updates and improvements to processes, procedures, and innovations.
  • Develop knowledge and skill to produce product in a manner that safely minimizes downtime.
  • Maintain a clean work environment in accordance with Food Safety and 5S program.
  • Follow all safety-related policies, rules, regulations, technical instructions, and guidelines.
  • Use situational awareness and actively look for unsafe behaviors and conditions.
  • Consistently wear appropriate PPE for the task at hand and within the assigned area.
  • Assist other departments or positions with duties as assigned.
