About The Position

The Greater Louisville Head Start (GLHS) Flex Teacher supports the Head Start and Early Head Start programs by providing classroom coverage across multiple centers during short- and long-term staff absences. Based out of the central program office, this role ensures continuity of care and learning for children when regular teaching staff are unavailable. Flex Teachers maintain developmentally appropriate practices, support established classroom routines, and collaborate with site staff to uphold safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environments. Assignments may vary in duration—from a single day to several months—depending on program needs.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related field required
  • Minimum of two years working in early childhood education programs.
  • Experience supporting diverse children and families in inclusive settings.
  • Ability to travel daily to assigned classroom locations throughout the program’s service area.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required (or willingness to obtain upon hire).

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish—or another language commonly spoken in the program—is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides classroom coverage in Head Start and Early Head Start centers during teacher or support staff absences, with assignments ranging from a single day to several months.
  • Implements daily routines and curriculum activities in alignment with the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework and site-specific plans.
  • Builds positive relationships with children and supports their social-emotional, physical, and cognitive development during transitions.
  • Maintains a safe and nurturing environment by following licensing regulations, health and safety protocols, and supervision guidelines.
  • Collaborates with classroom teams to ensure smooth transitions and consistent implementation of teaching strategies.
  • Communicates with administrative staff regarding assignment schedules, classroom needs, and any concerns that arise during coverage.
  • Documents attendance, incidents, and child observations as required by program standards during coverage periods.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and professionalism while adapting to various classroom environments and teaching teams.
  • Supports inclusive, culturally responsive practices that reflect the backgrounds and experiences of enrolled children.
  • Participates in required professional development, staff meetings, and coaching sessions to stay current with best practices in early childhood education.
  • Assists with transitions between classrooms or age groups (e.g., Infant/Toddler or Preschool), as assigned.
  • Models positive behavior guidance techniques and fosters a learning environment grounded in empathy and understanding.
  • Prepares and organizes classroom materials to support instruction and play-based learning.
  • Supports implementation of the program’s curriculum and assessment tools to promote child growth and development.
