About The Position

Thayer Power & Communication is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented GIS Technician Intern to support electric utility and telecommunications projects. This internship provides hands-on experience using industry-standard GIS platforms, including ESRI ArcGIS and Vetro FiberMap, while gaining exposure to fiber and electric utility network mapping. Under the guidance of experienced GIS professionals, the intern will assist with creating, maintaining, and validating geospatial data to support engineering, construction, and asset management activities.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing an Associate or Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Coursework or introductory experience with GIS concepts and geospatial mapping tools.
  • Familiarity with ESRI ArcGIS through academic projects or internships required.
  • Basic proficiency with GIS software and data management tools.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn data accuracy standards.
  • Ability to follow procedures, accept feedback, and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to Vetro FiberMap, fiber network mapping, or utility infrastructure is a plus but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in creating and updating GIS maps for electric utility and fiber network projects using ESRI ArcGIS and Vetro FiberMap.
  • Support maintenance of geospatial data for transmission, distribution, and fiber assets under supervision.
  • Help import, organize, and validate GIS data from field surveys, engineering designs, and as-built drawings.
  • Prepare basic maps, reports, and visualizations to support engineering, permitting, and construction teams.
  • Perform data quality checks to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance with standards.
  • Collaborate with GIS staff, engineers, and project managers to support timely project updates.
  • Learn and follow established GIS workflows, data standards, and documentation procedures.
  • Assist with special GIS projects and ad-hoc tasks as assigned.
