About The Position

The GIS Technician I/II position at HELIX WATER DISTRICT is an exciting opportunity to join a forward-thinking, community-focused organization. This role involves maintaining and enhancing the district's GIS database and mapping applications, specifically focusing on spatial and tabular data related to the water transmission and distribution system. The position requires close collaboration with engineering, construction, and operations staff, as well as excellent communication skills to explain GIS and GPS concepts to users with varying levels of technical expertise. The GIS Technician I is an entry-level position, with a progression path to GIS Technician II typically within 18-36 months, dependent on demonstrated skills and experience.

Requirements

• Associate degree in geography or a closely related field.
• A minimum of two years of GIS experience, preferably in a public utility setting.
• A valid Class C driver's license.
• Strong technical curiosity.
• Attention to detail.
• Collaborative mindset.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and enhance the district's GIS database and mapping applications.
• Maintain spatial and tabular data related to the water transmission and distribution system.
• Review engineering drawings, reports, legal maps, and various datasets.
• Perform quality control on data.
• Work closely with construction crews and operations staff in the office and occasionally in the field.
• Communicate GIS and GPS concepts clearly to users with less technical familiarity.
• Provide exceptional customer service to GIS users.
• Build effective maps, reports, and solutions.
