About The Position

The GIS Specialist is a detail-oriented professional responsible for supporting our waste and recycling operations through high-quality spatial data management, route optimization, and environmental compliance mapping. This role will work to directly improve operational efficiency, customer service, and drive sustainability outcomes across our service area.Hiring Range: $59,000 to $76,500; bonus-eligible position

Requirements

  • The ideal candidate will have proficiency with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, or QGIS, along with excellent listening, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
  • They should possess strong capabilities in spatial and network analysis and geoprocessing, and familiarity with SQL, Python, or ModelBuilder is preferred.
  • Candidates must demonstrate the ability to work effectively as part of a team in a collaborative environment and have 2–4 years of progressive experience with GIS systems.
  • Experience with relevant data tools such as Excel and Power BI is also required.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Geography, Environmental Science, Urban Planning, or a related field is required.
  • Additionally, applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Collects and interprets data to help facilitate organizational decision-making, as well as provides clear analysis of key trends and conducts spatial and statistical analyses.
  • Maintains and updates GIS datasets while ensuring data accuracy, metadata standards, and version control.
  • Integrates GPS, telematics, and municipal datasets, as well as other proprietary information, into enterprise GIS systems.
  • Builds and refines waste collection routes using data-driven analysis, supporting both dispatch and operations teams with route efficiency metrics, updated maps, and troubleshooting assistance.
  • Maps and tracks the location of Casella assets, including waste bins, dumpsters, compactors, and drop-off sites.
  • Assists in the planning of new facilities, expansion locations, and infrastructure upgrades, including conducting spatial modeling for landfill capacity, buffer zones, and environmental constraints.
  • Produces maps and spatial reports to satisfy both state and federal environmental reporting requirements.
  • Support numerous monitoring programs within Casella’s footprint, including groundwater wells and methane systems, as well as aid in providing recycling rates, diversion metrics, and overall service coverage.
  • Develops dashboards, maps, and other visual informatics to communicate clearly and effectively to both internal and external stakeholders, including organizational leadership.
  • Participates in training and other learning opportunities to expand knowledge of the company, regulatory guidelines and safety practices, as well as performing any other duties needed to help drive our vision, fulfill our mission, and/or abide by our core values.
