About The Position

The GIS Specialist plays a key role in maintaining and updating the City of Schertz’s GIS information and meeting other data and mapping needs for the organization. The GIS Specialist supports the use of Spatial information in development, public safety, transportation, communication, and many other City functions. They will create, share, and manage maps, apps, and spatial data and collaborate with both internal and external customers.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or a General education Development (GED) Certificate.
  • 1+ years’ experience as a GIS professional using ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online required
  • Ability to organize, inventory, and catalog new and existing GIS resources and create maps, applications, reports, and dashboards for internal and external use.
  • Ability to perform spatial analyses and prepare a variety of informational products to support the city's needs.
  • Ability to provide or supplement GIS training activities and provide technical support to GIS users.
  • Skilled at technical writing of help topics, checklist, user guides, presentations, and tutorials.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and triage issues reported by our customers.
  • Skilled at problem-solving and analytical thinking.

Nice To Haves

  • GIS Certification, a Bachelor’s Degree in GIS, or a Bachelor’s Degree with strong GIS course work is desired.
  • Proficiency with other ArcGIS Enterprise tools including StoryMaps, AppStudio, Dashboards, and ArcGIS Hub is desired.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Gather, update, maintain, and distribute GIS data relevant to the city’s diverse functions.
  • Collaborate with city management and staff to determine needs, requirements, and schedules.
  • Coordinate GIS activities with city departments and strive to build better systems and processes that promote an efficient use of our resources.
  • Share your ideas, explore initiatives and be an honest and open communicator with your teammates.
  • Maintain a high standard of quality by reviewing data for completeness and accuracy and identifying and correcting errors or omissions in the city’s GIS data.
  • Investigate new GIS technologies and their uses and improve our methods and practices to meet changing customer demands or needs.
  • Other reasonably related duties to the position of GIS specialist.
