GIS & Permit Data Analyst Intern - Summer '26

Blumen SystemsSan Francisco, CA
Onsite

About The Position

Blumen is rebuilding how America builds infrastructure. There's over $2 trillion in infrastructure projects stuck in regulatory purgatory across the US right now. Every power plant, transmission line, data center, and pipeline faces the same reality: navigating thousands of federal, state, and local regulations through broken government websites, expensive services that miss critical requirements, and bespoke tools that only work in one state. We've built the AI platform that aggregates 1,500+ geospatial data layers and regulatory intelligence to generate expert-grade permitting, siting, and regulatory compliance insights in hours instead of weeks. We're looking for a curious, detail-oriented intern with strong GIS fundamentals and a knack for working with data. You’ll help us expand the geospatial and regulatory datasets that power our platform—researching public data sources, analyzing spatial layers, standardizing attributes, and turning messy government data into structured intelligence our software can use. This is a hands-on role at the intersection of GIS, data analysis, and environmental policy.

Requirements

  • Pursuing or have recently completed a degree in GIS, environmental science, geography, land-use planning, natural resources, or a related field.
  • Working understanding of GIS concepts—you can navigate attribute tables, review data dictionaries, and work in platforms like ArcGIS or QGIS.
  • Comfortable wrangling messy data: cleaning CSVs, cross-referencing sources, and spotting inconsistencies.
  • Self-directed, organized, and energized by the satisfaction of tracking down the right dataset.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Python for data processing.
  • Familiarity with PostGIS or spatial SQL.
  • Background in environmental permitting or regulatory research.

Responsibilities

  • Research, evaluate, and integrate publicly available geospatial datasets (environmental, land-use, zoning, natural resources) into Blumen’s data ontology.
  • Perform QA/QC on spatial data layers—reviewing attributes, projections, completeness, and accuracy.
  • Standardize dataset descriptions, metadata, and schema to ensure consistency across 2,000+ data sources.
  • Analyze dataset attributes to determine which fields are customer-relevant and which should be excluded.
  • Support rapid data onboarding when customers request new datasets, regulatory documents, or maps.
  • Collaborate with engineering and product teams to improve how geospatial data flows into the platform.

Benefits

  • Hands-on exposure to the geospatial data and regulatory systems behind real infrastructure projects across the U.S.
  • Mentorship from a high-caliber team spanning GIS, engineering, environmental science, and AI.
  • Work out of our San Francisco HQ
  • A no-ego, get-things-done culture with high trust and high ownership.
  • Potential path to a full-time role for exceptional performers.
  • $20/hr
  • Lunch Reimbursement
