About The Position

The City of Friendswood is currently accepting applications for a summer GIS Intern. This position supports the GIS Division by assisting with GIS projects, spatial data maintenance, and digitizing activities. The internship provides hands-on experience in a professional municipal government environment, allowing students to apply classroom knowledge, develop technical GIS skills, and gain exposure to local government GIS practices and workflows.

Requirements

Completion of at least one year of college coursework in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geography, Landscape Architecture, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Urban Planning, Drafting, Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD), or a related field.
Previous experience following or applying routine procedures, policies, and/or methods learned in a classroom setting.
Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.

Responsibilities

Aid in managing the city's GIS program, with supervision, by following established procedures and schedules for routine maintenance of data.
Coordinate with GIS Manager to assist in data collection.
Import, integrate, update, clean and validate data from multiple sources.
Digitize paper maps and filing them in the City's document filling system.
Occasional field collection work accompanied by the City's GIS Field Technician.
Create, import, edit and maintain data in the City's GIS geodatabase.
Perform data analysis, map and application production.
Develop knowledge of internal structures, maintenance procedures, process customization, external interfaces, and GIS mapping development trends.
Understand the principles and practices of cartography, automated mapping, map projections, coordinate systems, and coordinate geometry.
Perform other duties as assigned.
