Under general supervision, collects various field data using portable Geographic Information System (GIS) equipment; performs inspections of flatwork in the right-of-way; and provides assistance to the Chief Surveyor in drainage studies. The role involves collecting field data on City Infrastructure, performing utility locates, and locating fire hydrants, fiber optic cables, and sanitary sewer manholes. The technician will also assist the Chief Surveyor with drainage studies, set grades for culverts, and perform topographic surveys. Additionally, the position requires inspecting the construction of flat work in the right of way, including driveways, sidewalks, and curbs, and reviewing design plans, GIS, and Google Earth for processing right-of-way construction and utility permits. Communication of deficiencies in permit applications and design plans with customers is also a key responsibility, as is reviewing revised plans to ensure comments are incorporated. Field evaluation of utility conflicts and ROW construction permit inspections are also part of the role. The position supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public through courteous and cooperative behavior, maintaining confidentiality, and performing other duties as required. Employees may be required to work during emergencies to ensure public safety and restore vital services.
