About The Position

The City of Renton is seeking a skilled and motivated GIS professional to join the Public Works team as a GIS Analyst 1-3. This role involves supporting the Public Works Departments GIS and Asset Management objectives, including data management of utility and transportation sections, utilizing and innovating GIS applications, and assisting with short- and long-term asset management planning. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 2 years GIS experience using GIS software to produce maps, perform spatial analysis, and generate databases (for GIS Analyst 1).
  • Minimum 4 years GIS experience using GIS software to produce maps, perform spatial analysis, and generate databases (for GIS Analyst 2).
  • Minimum 6 years GIS experience using GIS software to produce maps, perform spatial analysis, and generate databases (for GIS Analyst 3).
  • Or minimum 6 years relevant education and experience (for GIS Analyst 1).
  • Or minimum 8 years relevant education and experience (for GIS Analyst 2).
  • Or minimum 10 years relevant education and experience (for GIS Analyst 3).
  • Successful passing of a required background check and national fingerprint-based records check.
  • Reside in Washington State and within a reasonable distance to their worksite.
  • Valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Edit and update spatial and tabular GIS data and metadata.
  • Create new GIS data through digitization, conversion, extraction, and georeferencing.
  • Complete GIS data requests in support of projects, regional partnerships, and vendors.
  • Support or actively participate in field data collection efforts.
  • Create print and digital map products applying appropriate cartographic techniques based on map purpose and end-user requirements.
  • Create online (interactive) maps for presentation, editing, and analysis reflecting end-user requirements and business needs.
  • Perform analysis of spatial and tabular data to support projects and business needs.
  • Research and acquire external spatial and non-spatial data as required to support projects and business needs.
  • Perform technical and administrative tasks associated with the GIS system using GIS equipment, software, data, and products.
  • Design, develop, maintain, and analyze geographic databases with database management software.
  • Design and produce computer generated maps and reports of the City’s infrastructure, topography, parcels, land use, and comprehensive plans through the use of GIS software, and database management software.
  • Define, develop and maintain primary mapping layers, databases, applications and associated standards required to produce the products needed.
  • Work on GIS projects both independently and as a member of a team; design project methodology and produce final products.
  • Organize, maintain, update, analyze and retrieve information from various sources requiring close coordination with all principal providers and users of geographic information in other divisions and departments of the City, as well as outside agencies.
  • Train and assist GIS system users in defining needs and developing GIS applications.
  • Assist defining GIS standards as related to mapping layers and database structures.
  • Provide general guidance, instruction, and interpretation on the uses of GIS data.
  • Confer with all City departments, as well as outside agencies, on matters pertaining to GIS projects.
  • Work with other City departments to coordinate mapping and database needs for proposed projects and to resolve problems.
  • Provide technical and administrative assistance for the GIS program by operating GIS equipment, software, data, and products.
  • Perform a variety of complex and independent duties involved in the management of large-scale GIS studies and projects.
  • Design or review GIS projects to ensure compliance and compatibility with existing systems and applicable codes, standards, specifications and practices; may perform lead duties as assigned.
  • May provide training, instruction and feedback to personnel in assigned work group; may provide information to staff on procedural changes; may assist in scheduling and assigning tasks to ensure accomplishment of functions in a timely manner.
  • Present facts clearly and accurately in graphic form.
  • Perform complex calculations of distances, areas, and quantities, using applicable software, requiring an understanding of geometry, trigonometry and algebra.
  • Install GIS desktop software and updates on user workstations and troubleshoot performance problems.
  • Assist with GIS software and platform maintenance and monitoring.
  • Manage users access to platform components and content.
  • Perform GIS analysis of demographic and ancillary data to support and direct community planning and economic development efforts.
  • Interpret complex engineering plans and documents to transfer asset and system information to databases.
  • Design accurate and efficient methods to perform GIS analysis and evaluate result in order to answer complex business questions or support end-user requirements.
  • Develop monitoring, tracking, and analytical tools and dashboards to provide statistics and operational insights in support of long-term planning and resource allocation.
  • Plan and lead high-level GIS projects.
  • Create workflows and automations to reduce manual GIS data editing and update.
  • Automate repetitive tasks or analysis requests by designing and deploying standalone or application-based scripting.
  • Lead the design, management, and monitoring of departmental GIS databases and ancillary data.
  • Perform GIS database maintenance using available database management tools and applications.
  • Create SQL scripts for database query, analysis, and data extraction.
  • Create database views to improve data accessibility and integration.
  • Create database triggers and stored procedures to automate data maintenance and update tasks.
  • Design and manage the integration of GIS and other information system data and platforms.
  • Possess an understanding of structured data file and interchange formats outside their accessibility within software and platform interfaces and modify them appropriately when required.
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting of software, platform, and data issues.
  • Take a lead role with vendor support to resolve difficult technical issues or improve functionality or performance of GIS and related systems and platforms.
  • Continually apply understanding of and expertise with City GIS software and platforms to solve problems and identify possible enhancements.
  • Mentor GIS Analyst I/II staff as required.
  • Take a lead role in the installation, configuration, and update all GIS software and platform components.
  • Participate in all levels of GIS software and platform administration.
  • Design, create, and deploy, or migrate GIS databases.
  • Assist with overall City GIS coordination.
  • Perform advanced statistical analysis involving demographic, economic, and equity indicators and data.
  • Create interactive analytical tools which allows parameters to be modified by department users.
  • Provide guidance and recommendation of analysis methods involving demographic, economic, and equity indicators and data.
  • Develop advanced network data models and applications.
  • Perform advanced GIS data integrations with asset management and other information systems used by department sections.
  • Guide the design and deployment of GIS network data models and set standards for data maintenance.
  • Contribute to an environment of teamwork and respect.
  • Foster a culture of equity and inclusion by recognizing the diverse needs and perspectives of groups and individuals.
  • Remain current with relevant technological advancements as it relates to field.
  • Participate in and help provide cross-training in processes as directed by management to ensure a well-rounded team for coverage purposes.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • May be assigned to support City priorities during emergencies.
