About The Position

The head basketball coach is responsible for the overall development, organization, and implementation of the basketball program. This includes providing leadership to basketball personnel and student athletes, and ensuring adherence to all LHSAA, Jefferson Parish Public School System (JPPSS), and Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) rules and regulations. The role requires working after school hours to prepare the team for competition, and potentially on weekends and holidays. The coach must also maintain the security and confidentiality of student records and passwords, and manage program equipment and finances.

Requirements

Ability to communicate in Standard English, both orally and in writing and/or digitally.
Ability to accurately give and receive information via telecommunication system.
Ability to communicate successfully and tactfully with students, parents, and school personnel while following JPPSS policies.
Ability to accurately communicate with members of the media.
Ability to represent the school and/or school system at various functions.
Ability to accurately compile and access data, summarize information, and provide written reports to his/her supervisor.
Valid Louisiana Teaching Certificate, and/or current LHSAA requirements.
Possess a CDL class B or above with a P and S endorsement free of air brake restrictions.
Meet all requirements of the Louisiana Department of Education school bus driver component.
Employment with the Jefferson Parish Public School System as a teacher and/or administrator.
Meet the requirements in Article 3.3 (Faculty Coaches) of the LHSAA handbook.
Demonstrated expertise, knowledge, and competency in basic basketball fundamentals.
Professional knowledge of LHSAA and JPPSS rules and regulations for basketball.
Expertise, knowledge, and competency in conditioning of athletes sport specific.

Nice To Haves

Previous playing experience in basketball preferred (on college or university level; minimum experience on high school level).
Previous coaching experience on the junior varsity, junior high/middle school or other recreation activity level in basketball.
Expertise, knowledge, and competency in first aid for the prevention and treatment of basketball injuries.

Responsibilities

Develop, organize, and implement the entire basketball program.
Provide leadership to basketball personnel and student athletes.
Adhere to all LHSAA, JPPSS, and LHSAA rules and regulations.
Maintain security of electronic and print records regarding confidentiality of student information and passwords.
Provide overall supervision of the basketball program.
Assign duties of other coaches working in basketball.
Maintain, issue, inventory, and order all new equipment.
Maintain all records specified by the LHSAA and JPPSS.
Schedule games and related activities pertaining to basketball.
Build sportsmanship and provide good public relations in the school and community.
Ensure all student athletes have a current physical exam.
Ensure all student athletes have adequate insurance coverage as specified by JPPSS and LHSAA, and that proper documentation exists.
Keep the principal and faculty informed of departure times for trips and ensure participants have transportation home.
Set criteria for lettering and explain it to participants and parents.
Maintain team statistics.
Participate in professional development through workshops, literature, clinics, and seminars.
Acquire thirty-six (36) Continuing Learning Units (CLUs) per year.
Adhere to Parish and State requirements for promptly reporting rosters, schedules, scores, eligibility, or documentation of incidents or injuries.
Cooperate, communicate, and work with the school-based athletic director and administrator in charge of athletics.
Evaluate assistant coaches that he/she supervises.
Perform all duties as assigned by the principal and/or appropriate administrator.
