Laurel and Willingboro locations are only outpatient units, whereas the Special Test Unit (STU), located on the sixth floor in the main hospital is an outpatient and inpatient unit. All are run by the hospital largely to serve diagnostic and therapeutic needs of the Gastroenterology Division. The most common gastroenterology procedures are upper endoscopy and colonoscopy. In the pulmonary suite (STU only), endoscopy of the airway procedures is performed, and are commonly called bronchoscopy. All units are staffed by surgical schedulers, patient service representatives, nurses, and GI technicians. Anesthesiology is present for all GI procedures. Nurses rotate between the admission (Pre op), procedure suites, recovery (PACU) and pre-admission testing. They must be familiar with all roles and procedures in the GI Unit.

Requirements

  • GI tech experience and/or patient care experience (medical assistant, patient care technician, etc.)
  • Ability to learn IDX and EPIC applications
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required
  • Current NJ-BLS Certification (Basic Life Support)

Nice To Haves

  • Strong customer service skills preferred, some desk duties required

Responsibilities

  • Prepare rooms and equipment before endoscopic procedures and clean up and sterilize after procedures
  • Maintain an inventory of equipment and supplies for endoscopic procedures
  • Ensure equipment functions properly
  • Prepare waiting and recovery rooms or procedure suites
  • Maintain endoscopic equipment, including cleaning, disinfecting and calibrating instruments according to manufacturer guidelines
  • Transport patients according to medical personnel instructions
  • Help physicians and nurses perform endoscopic procedures
  • Attend training as necessary to enhance or refresh skills
  • Collect specimens from patients
  • Collaborate effectively with other care providers regarding procedures and patients' conditions
  • Stay current on endoscopy developments by reading literature, speaking with colleagues or participating in professional organizations
  • Assist with Business Office Support duties and will be trained to EPIC applications and front desk registration & copay collection
