About The Position

Atlas is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer 2 to join our Geotechnical Engineering team in San Diego, California. In this role, you will apply geotechnical engineering principles to public- and private-sector projects involving buildings, bridges, highways, railways, airports, pipelines, levees, and other essential infrastructure. You will contribute to technical analysis, field investigations, construction observation, reporting, and project delivery while working closely with experienced engineers, clients, and project teams. This position is well suited for an engineer who values technical quality, safe field practices, clear communication, and work that has a visible impact on the communities we serve.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
  • At least four years of geotechnical engineering experience, including design and analysis, field investigations, and construction supervision.
  • A California Professional Engineer license.
  • A strong foundation in geotechnical engineering, soil and rock mechanics, earthquake engineering, pavement engineering, and groundwater hydrogeology.
  • Experience with relevant engineering software, which may include Slide, SLOPE/W, LPILE, SHAFT, AllPile, SHAKE, or DEEPSOIL.
  • The ability to communicate technical information clearly and work effectively with people from different disciplines and backgrounds.
  • A valid driver’s license and driving record that meet applicable company requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • A master’s degree with an emphasis in geotechnical engineering is preferred.
  • Familiarity with California Division of the State Architect, California Geological Survey, or Caltrans standards and deliverables is helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Perform geotechnical analyses and develop recommendations for foundations, earthwork, slopes, seepage, lateral earth pressures, liquefaction, seismic deformation, and related design conditions.
  • Plan and support subsurface investigations, laboratory testing, instrumentation monitoring, and other field programs.
  • Observe foundation and earthwork construction, document field conditions, and communicate findings that may affect safety, quality, or design.
  • Prepare clear technical reports, calculations, recommendations, proposals, and other project deliverables.
  • Coordinate project resources, schedules, staff assignments, and technical activities in partnership with senior team members.
  • Build productive relationships with clients, project partners, colleagues, and the local professional community.
  • LA Deputy Grading Inspector (LADGI) authorized by the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) to oversee grading and earthwork activities on construction sites within the City of Los Angeles.
  • Will ensures that all grading operations comply with approved plans, geotechnical engineering recommendations, and local building codes.
  • Monitor and verify that grading and earthwork work is performed in accordance with: Approved grading/shoring plans; Soils & geology reports; city approval letters
