Geotechnical Design Segment Manager

Ferrovial•Nashville, TN

About The Position

The Geotechnical Design Segment Manager supports geotechnical design work for a segment of a major civil infrastructure project. The role assists with geotechnical analyses, design calculations, field and laboratory coordination, technical studies, quantity estimates, design reviews, and preparation of reports and other documentation. Work supports roadway embankments and subgrade, earth slopes, soil and rock cuts, bridge foundations, earth-retaining structures, and foundations for minor structures, in accordance with Ferrovial Group standards, applicable industry standards, and project requirements. The position coordinates project tasks and works with project managers, senior and regional engineers, field teams, laboratory personnel, consultants, design teams, clients, and other specialists. It also supports and reviews the work of more junior engineers and reports segment progress to the Geotechnical Design Manager.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a related engineering field.
  • Working knowledge of geotechnical design, subsurface investigations, soil and rock classification, geophysical testing, laboratory testing, construction materials, and applicable ASTM or local industry standards.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, coordination, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively across design, field, laboratory, consultant, and project teams.

Nice To Haves

  • At least ten years of relevant geotechnical engineering experience supporting heavy civil, transportation, or infrastructure projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, or progress toward licensure.
  • Familiarity with geotechnical analysis, CAD, or engineering design software.

Responsibilities

  • Perform technical work related to geotechnical design tasks and project support for the assigned segment.
  • Support design for roadway embankments and subgrade, earth slopes, bridge foundations, earth-retaining structures, and foundations for minor structures.
  • Analyze ground-movement predictions, construction-impact assessments, mitigation strategies for geotechnical risks (including karstic features), and potential impacts on existing structures.
  • Assist with preparing two- and three-dimensional analytical models under direction from the Geotechnical Design Manager or senior design staff.
  • Support preparation of geotechnical study proposals, technical notes, reports, and quantity information for the segment.
  • Review and support geotechnical design calculations and documents prepared by others.
  • Evaluate subsurface soil and rock information using applicable ASTM and local industry standards for field and laboratory testing.
  • Interpret soil and rock test data and classify subsurface soil and rock conditions for engineering purposes.
  • Apply geotechnical principles and analyses to support practical, compliant design solutions.
  • Review construction documents, drawings, schedules, specifications, technical plans, geotechnical reports, and engineering information to support design development.
  • Discuss geotechnical topics with the client and the designer’s specialists, and collaborate with project parties to address issues involving modeling, soil-structure interaction, ground improvement, and risk mitigation.
  • Supervise and review geotechnical work developed by more junior engineers on the team.
  • Coordinate geotechnical tasks, including boring location plans, drilling-operation documentation, field investigations, and laboratory testing support.
  • Assist with geotechnical drilling, field investigations, geophysical testing, and laboratory testing as needed.
  • Coordinate with project managers, senior and regional engineers, field teams, laboratory personnel, consultants, and design teams to support timely and accurate deliverables.
  • Assist with preparing geotechnical engineering reports, proposals, technical memorandums, letters, calculations, and design documentation.
