About The Position

Sanborn is seeking a Geospatial Imaging Specialist to provide technical expertise on geospatial imaging projects involving remote sensing, photogrammetry, and Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). Projects support complex natural and cultural resource management programs, including forestry, botany, fisheries, hydrology, soils, wildlife, and fire ecology. The role involves collecting data through geospatial imaging methods, preparing metadata, coordinating projects, and performing image and photogrammetric processing. It also provides national, regional, and local project support, raster data management, technology evaluations, and general technical functions. The position is based in Lakewood, Colorado, and combines onsite work at the Denver Federal Center with offsite telework. The employee must live within commuting distance because onsite work is required. Some travel may be required. This is a temporary, full-time assignment expected to last approximately one year; its duration may change based on business needs. The selected candidate must pass a drug screen and satisfy National Criminal History Check requirements as part of the credentialing process. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or possess a current work visa. Applications are accepted through October 30, 2026.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a geospatial or related discipline.
  • At least 3–5 years of professional experience developing geospatial imaging products.
  • Current FAA Part 107 certification.
  • Experience conducting field-based geospatial imaging projects, including UAS operations, ground control collection, plot-level sampling, and/or terrestrial imaging for photogrammetric data capture.
  • Knowledge of photogrammetric and structure-from-motion principles, including aerial triangulation, semi-global matching, bundle adjustments, stereo compilation, and dynamic camera calibration.
  • Knowledge of data validation and accuracy-assessment techniques for quantifying and reporting error in geospatial datasets.
  • Experience designing, managing, and maintaining geospatial databases, including Esri file and SDE geodatabases.
  • Knowledge of raster, point-cloud, and 3D data formats and their properties, and experience developing workflows to process these data sources.
  • Professional knowledge of remote-sensing concepts and principles, including sensors, platforms, software packages, and current science and technology trends; high-level competence in digital image processing, GIS, and other geospatial technologies.
  • Direct professional experience with image-processing and photogrammetric software, including Erdas Imagine, PhotoScan, Google Earth Engine, and/or Esri image-related tools.
  • Professional working competence applying remote-sensing technology and functional ability in geographic projections, transformation, geodetic science, database management, GIS, and statistics.
  • Professional experience with multiple types and resolutions of remote-sensing data, and advanced knowledge of sensor technologies and platforms such as LIDAR, aerial photography, stereo-captured commercial high-resolution satellites, LANDSAT, and UAS.
  • Professional experience coordinating multiple projects.
  • Ability to work in a team with personnel from diverse physical, biological, ecological, technical, and environmental sciences and with external partners such as NGOs, universities, and the general public.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or possess a current work visa.
  • If selected, must pass a drug screen and satisfy National Criminal History Check requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience scripting with Python or JavaScript is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct or assist with UAS, close-range photogrammetry, and GPS field campaigns to capture remotely sensed datasets.
  • Coordinate and track project work, including field operations and logistics.
  • Perform image processing such as orthorectification, image registration, atmospheric and radiometric correction, and mosaicking using tools including Erdas Imagine and ENVI.
  • Derive spectral indices such as NDVI, pan-sharpened imagery, and change-detection products from remotely sensed data.
  • Perform image classification and time-series information production under the supervision of the lead Remote Sensing Specialist, using tools such as Google Earth Engine.
  • Use open-source point-classification tools, including Cloud Compare and Support Vector Machines (SVM).
  • Develop orthoimagery, digital terrain models, and 3-D point clouds from UAS and traditional aerial imagery using PhotoScan or similar photogrammetric software.
  • Process Full Motion Video datasets.
  • Participate in project teams by providing geospatial imaging support.
  • Assist staff and agency partners in designing geospatial imaging projects.
  • Attend meetings, conferences, and seminars to present work and findings to federal and academic audiences.
  • Support development and delivery of geospatial imaging training content.
  • Develop metadata for geospatial imaging datasets that comply with federal standards.
  • Provide national, regional, and local project support, raster data management, technology evaluations, and general technical functions.
