About The Position

The History Department at the College of the Holy Cross invites applications and expressions of interest for the inaugural George and Bernice Wyss Phillipp Professor of History. This endowed professorship seeks a historian with a distinguished scholarly record and expertise in the History of Science and/or the History of Medicine. The successful candidate will have the academic qualifications for a tenured full professor and will be expected to maintain an active research agenda with an international profile, design interdisciplinary courses, mentor students, broaden the curriculum in the history of science and/or medicine within a liberal arts context, and participate in College and departmental service. Excellence in undergraduate teaching, including evidence-based strategies and fostering a sense of belonging for all students, is also required. The teaching load is 3 courses per year. The College emphasizes high-impact scholarship, outstanding teaching, and a deep commitment to inclusive excellence, with academic freedom as a cornerstone.

Requirements

• Record of distinguished scholarly achievement.
• Demonstrated research and teaching expertise in the History of Science and/or the History of Medicine.
• Academic qualifications for appointment as a tenured full professor in the Department of History.
• Established reputation of distinguished scholarly achievement.
• Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching.

Responsibilities

• Maintain an active research agenda and internationally significant academic profile.
• Design interdisciplinary courses.
• Mentor students across programs.
• Help broaden the curriculum in the history of science and/or medicine within the liberal arts by building bridges across disciplines.
• Take full part in College and departmental service obligations.
• Demonstrate excellence in undergraduate teaching, including the use of evidence-based teaching strategies and course designs to create classroom environments where all students have a sense of belonging, are valued, and can flourish.
