About The Position

The City of Falls Church Department of Public Works is seeking a motivated student intern interested in Geographic Information Systems, data management, public engagement tools, and local government operations. This internship offers hands-on experience supporting the City’s day-to-day geospatial operations while learning about the public sector. Interns will contribute to meaningful projects that support the community.

Requirements

  • Comfortable working with the Esri suite of software and related products at a basic or intermediate level (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Experience Builder, ArcGIS Field Maps, ArcGIS Instant Apps, ArcGIS Story Maps).
  • Comfortable working with Computer-aided design (CAD) software.
  • Detail-oriented, analytical, organized, and dependable.
  • Ability to handle confidential information professionally.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across teams in various disciplines, both in-office and in the field.
  • Comfortable with the Microsoft suite of software and related products (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word).
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Students currently pursuing a degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering/Science, or a related field.

Nice To Haves

  • A basic knowledge of Microsoft Power BI is helpful, but a willingness to learn is most important.

Responsibilities

  • Work alongside the GIS Manager and other Department of Public Works Engineering and Operations professionals.
  • Gain exposure to a wide range of geospatial activities, including understanding current workflows and identifying where GIS can add efficiencies.
  • Contribute to improving and modernizing the City’s master basemap layers (transportation, sewers, real estate, easements) through data conversion and digitization.
  • Assist in-office and field crews with leveraging GIS tools.
  • Create innovative maps, reports, and visualizations that translate spatial data into actionable insights for internal departments and community audiences.
  • Support other department tasks as needed.
