About The Position

We are seeking a highly motivated Genomics Co-op/Intern to support the development and application of long-read sequencing workflows for novel haplotype discovery in diverse germplasm. This project focuses on leveraging PacBio HiFi sequencing and advanced bioinformatics approaches to identify genetic variation beyond single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), including structural variants (SVs) and copy number variants (CNVs), that may contribute to valuable agronomic traits. The successful candidate will work at the interface of computational biology, genomics, and plant breeding to develop scalable analytical pipelines, characterize novel haplotypes in diverse germplasm, and evaluate strategies for incorporating genetic variation into breeding applications.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics, Genetics, Plant Science or related field.
  • Experience with long-read sequencing analysis (PacBio, ONT, etc)
  • Experience with variant calling (SNPs, indels, SV, CNV)
  • Knowledge of command-line interfaces for bioinformatic tools
  • Python and/or R experience
  • Knowledge of population genetics, haplotypes, and genomic diversity.

Nice To Haves

  • Scientific curiosity and problem-solving mindset
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks
  • Effective written and verbal communication
  • Collaborative approach to multidisciplinary research
