About The Position

The Genetics Laboratory at Credit Valley Hospital is seeking a Genetics Technologist. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing assigned tests and procedures in the Cytogenetic and Molecular Laboratories. The Regional Genetics Program at Trillium Health Partners-Credit Valley (THP) Site consists of both Clinical and Laboratory Genetic services. Specialists include Clinical Geneticists, Laboratory Geneticists, Genetic Counselors and Genetic Technologists and Lab Technicians. The THP Genetics Laboratory is an integrated service responsible for Molecular Genetics, Molecular Pathology, Cytogenetics and Microarray testing of a broad range of specimen types. In 2024, close to 15,000 genetic specimens were processed and reported by the THP Genetics Laboratory. The laboratory is located in a bright, spacious facility at the Credit Valley Hospital.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Medical Genomics (MHSc) OR Master of Science (MSc) in Human Genetics and/or Genetic Counselling.
  • MLT certification in Molecular Genetics and/or Cytogenetics is an asset.
  • Several years of experience working in a clinical genetics laboratory is preferred.
  • Experience in advanced genetic laboratory applications (array technologies, next generation sequencing).
  • Excellent written and oral communication in English.
  • Collaborative team player.
  • Knowledge of commercially available tertiary analytical software applications.
  • Effective critical thinking, problem solving and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate clinical significance of sequence, copy number and structural variants found by microarray, NGS assays and Optical Genome Mapping.
  • Search internal datasets as well as published literature, online mutation databases, or other academic resources for information on variants detected in clinical testing.
  • Interpret clinical significance of variants using ACMGG or CAP/AMP/ASCO Guidelines.
  • Prepare variant assessment summaries.
  • Draft clear and concise clinical genetic testing reports.
  • Work closely with Laboratory Geneticists to ensure reporting standards are met or exceeded.
