About The Position

Nemours is seeking a Genetics Counselor in Wilmington, DE. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced and motivated genetic counselor to work with our medical genetics section and neurology specialists. The genetic counselor will support existing services with the opportunity to expand the scope of involvement. The genetic counselor will work with members of the medical genetics team, including medical geneticists, physician assistants, and genetic counselors, to provide care to pediatric patients and their families. There is an opportunity for collaborative care as well as independent genetic counseling visits. Medical genetics referrals include a wide range of indications, including neurodevelopmental diagnoses, congenital anomalies, complex medical histories, and connective tissue disorders. The genetic counselor also works autonomously, yet collaboratively, with Neurology specialists to provide genetic counseling and coordination of testing for patients referred with multiple indications, not limited to epilepsy, neuropathy, movement, and neuromuscular disorders, including participation in an MDA clinic. Genetic counseling assistants provide support for both roles. The genetic counselor is also encouraged to participate in the development and execution of clinical research studies, manuscript/abstract preparation, and scientific presentations. There are multiple internal opportunities for accrual of continuing education credits.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree from an Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling-accredited program
  • Be either board certified or have active candidate status at the time of hire (i.e. working on passing board exam).
  • This is a shared position with pediatric medical genetics and neurology.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for providing current and accurate information regarding genetic testing, informed consent, results interpretation, and recommendations.
  • Works collaboratively with other genetics providers during outpatient and inpatient genetics visits.
  • Completes chart preparation and obtains appropriate history and consent, providing genetic counseling and coordination of diagnostic testing and follow-up for individuals referred for clinical genetics assessment.
  • Provides appropriate risk assessment, genetic counseling, and resource identification based on family history and genetic testing/evaluation and coordinates necessary evaluations, diagnostic tests, and referrals to other specialists.
  • Follow up with patients as necessary regarding disclosure of test results, recommendations, resources, and psychosocial support.
  • Communicate with appropriate internal and external providers for purposes of consultation, referral, and coordination of patient care.
  • Assure complete and accurate documentation related to genetic information and genetic counseling in the medical record.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge regarding clinical genetics by attending educational and scientific conferences and participation in continuing education regularly.
  • Supervision of genetic counseling master program and other rotating students.
