About The Position

ABS Global, a Genus Company, is seeking an ABS Genetics and Genomics Intern to join our Dairy Product Development Team in DeForest, Wisconsin (greater Madison area). This role offers an exciting opportunity to work alongside a team of PhD geneticists advancing animal breeding, quantitative genetics, and genomics. The intern will contribute to key dairy genetic research and product development initiatives by analyzing large-scale dairy data sets to support trait discovery and genomic evaluation. Projects may include data mining, pipeline development, analysis, gaining hands-on experience in genetic program development as well as investigating novel traits, supporting robotic milking trait development, and evaluating genomic traits that help improve dairy producer outcomes and customer experience. Through data mining, statistical analysis, and pipeline development, the intern will generate insights that support genetic program development and the creation of innovative products and tools for customers. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, proficiency with statistical tools, and a passion for applying data-driven approaches to advance genetic improvement in the dairy industry. In this position you will work 40 hours per week, typically during normal office hours, but times could range on a day-to-day basis. The hourly compensation range for this position is ($26 - $30) USD. The compensation provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. Genus considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills. Requirements

  • MS or PhD student in Animal Science, Plant Science, Quantitative Genetics, Statistics, Data Science, or related field, required
  • Strong analytical skills, familiarity with statistical packages (R, Python, etc.), and preferred experience with scripting or programming tools
  • Available for at least 12 weeks during the summer
  • Authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with genetic/genomic data, bioinformatics, estimating breeding values, and/or breeding index development.
  • Direct agricultural experience (plant or animal).
  • Strong interest in genetic data analysis, using data to develop on-farm genetic strategies, genetic program development, and custom genetic indices.

Responsibilities

  • Use statistical and analytic tools to perform data mining, data pipeline development, and analysis of large dairy genetic and performance datasets.
  • Support trait discovery initiatives and genomic trait evaluations, including projects related to robotic milking and other emerging dairy industry technologies.
  • Conduct experimental design and investigate new statistical models and analytical methods.
  • Generate insights that inform genetic strategies, proprietary genetic program development, and custom genetic indices.
  • Contribute to the development of products and tools that enhance customer experience and support on-farm decision making.
  • Uphold the Genus core values, mission, and vision.
  • Position may require working outside of normal business hours.
  • Perform other projects and responsibilities as assigned.
