About The Position

This genetic counselor role is embedded within the Allina Health Cancer Institute (AHCI) and is dedicated to oncology-focused genetic counseling. The position joins a collaborative team of 12 genetic counselors providing care to patients with cancer diagnoses, as well as clinically unaffected individuals. The genetic counselor is an integral member of the multidisciplinary oncology care team, contributing to risk assessment, personalized screening and treatment decision-making and family-centered care. Active participation in tumor boards, case conferences, process improvement initiatives, and disease-specific teams is expected. This is a hybrid role with in-clinic responsibilities across AHCI metro sites.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Genetic Counseling, or equivalent
  • Certified Genetic Counselor - American Board of Genetic Counseling required or American Board of Genetics and Genomics within 180 Days
  • Minnesota Licensure for Genetic Counselor required within 180 days
  • Lifting weight up to 10 lbs. occasionally, negligible weight frequently

  • 2 to 5 years experience providing genetic counseling

Responsibilities

  • Provides genetic services for patients, families and other health care professionals.
  • Reviews patient/family indications for referral for genetic counseling.
  • Constructs relevant, targeted and comprehensive personal and family histories and pedigrees, including 3-4 generation pedigrees.
  • Obtains and reviews medical records and available genetic test results.
  • Ensures information is communicated to patients and families with consideration for education level, age, culture and population specific considerations.
  • Collaborates with physicians and other health care professionals as a member of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Critically assesses genetic/genomic, medical and social science literature and information.
  • Provides genetic counseling to patients and family.
  • Chooses appropriate tests based on family history or diagnosis.
  • Discusses testing and management options including limitations of the test, specificity and sensitivity.
  • Discusses implications and genetic risks related to patient and family history.
  • Facilitates informed decision making related to testing and management.
  • Participates in specialty lab orders and informed consent process.
  • Advocates for the patient/family, promoting client-centered, informed, noncoercive and value-based decision making.
  • Documents findings.
  • Documents in a timely manner according to department guidelines.
  • Documents assessment findings, risks and relevant options for testing and any referral or recommendations.
  • Documents discussions and decisions made by patient and family.
  • Documents all correspondence.
  • Orders lab tests through the electronic medical record.
  • Documents telephone encounters in the medical record.
  • Participates in department/service leadership.
  • Evaluates personal clinical quality and effectiveness.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary improvement teams.
  • Analyzes organizational systems that have an impact on patient care and assist in care optimization.
  • Contributes to the professional development of peers, colleagues, and others.
  • Participates in educational activities that enhance professional performance.
  • Assists in the development and standardization of practice protocols and processes.
  • Participates in medical and genetics research projects.
  • Incorporate and share research findings into practice.
  • Participates in establishing and monitoring standards of practice in collaboration with other genetics experts.
  • Participates with physician leadership to advance program development as indicated.
