About The Position

The John Muir Cancer Institute Genetic Counselor provides information and support to families who have members affected with familial cancers, are themselves affected with familial cancers or who may be at risk for familial cancer. The Genetic Counselor identifies families at risk, investigates the problem or disease present in the family, interprets information about the disorder, and analyzes inheritance patterns and risks of recurrence and reviews available options with the family. The Genetic Counselor also provides supportive counseling to families, serves as a patient advocate, and refers individuals and families to community and state supportive services when indicated. The Genetic Counselor serves as an educator and resource person for other health care professionals and for the general public. The Genetic Counselor is accountable for administrative functions of the Cancer Genetics Counseling service as they pertain to their own patients. In partnership with other Genetic Counselors and the Genetic Counseling Clerk, the Genetic Counselor assists in managing the flow of patients through the Genetic Counseling service.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree - Genetic Counseling Required
  • GC Genetic Counselor License - California Department of Public Health Required
  • Genetic Counselor certification - ABGC American Board of Genetic Counseling, Inc. Required or Board Eligible
  • If an employee does not pass the ABGC boards exam then their employment at JMH will discontinue.
