The Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) investigates certain deaths within New York City, including deaths caused by criminal violence, accidents, suicide, sudden or unattended deaths, deaths in correctional facilities, and deaths occurring in suspicious or unusual circumstances. OCME's purpose is to protect public health and serve impartial justice through forensic science and medicine, while supporting families and communities. Its CARES values are Commitment, Accountability, Resilience, Excellence, and Service. OCME seeks to expand its capacity for genetic counseling, molecular genetics testing, and referrals of living family members to clinical care. Finding a genetic cause of a sudden, unexpected death may help prevent sudden death in surviving relatives. The Genetic Counselor supports families before and after testing, provides counseling and reports, advises medical examiners, communicates with clinical partner programs, and participates in education and medical-literature activities.
