About The Position

In collaboration with physicians, provides high-level independent genetic counseling for adult patients. Clinically assess and counsel individuals and families regarding genetics and risk management. Provides education to patients and families as well as to physicians and the community.

Requirements

Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling from a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC) required, or obtained within 12 months from hire date.
American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) certification required within 12 months of hire.
State of Idaho provisional /regular license, or obtained within 12 months of hire.

Nice To Haves

Minimum of one-year experience in Genetic Counseling preferred.

Responsibilities

Demonstrate knowledge and skills to competently care for all assigned age groups (Adolescent, Adult, Geriatrics)
Ensure the accuracy of documenting services and supplies provided to the patients.
Work in collaboration with individual Programs and with referring physicians to ensure provision of appropriate care.
Obtain and evaluate the family histories of the patient and patient’s family members to provide genetic evaluation.
Discuss with the patient and the family the features, natural history, means of diagnosis, genetic and environmental factors, and management of risk for pre-disposition syndromes or genetic conditions.
Identify, coordinate, and obtain informed consent for genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic studies as appropriate for genetic assessment.
Integrate the results of genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic tests with individual and family medical histories.
Explain to a patient and the patient’s family the clinical implications of the results of genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic tests.
Provide risk analysis and calculation.
Discuss informed consent, privacy issues, and confidentiality and discrimination concerns with patients.
Provide post-test counseling and support, including review of medical management options.
Provide accurate, appropriate and timely reports for patient records and to referring physicians.
Identify and use community resources that provide medical, educational, financial, psychosocial support and advocacy.
Provide genetics education to other health care professionals.
Attend applicable meetings and conferences.
