UCSF Medical Center seeks a Genetic Counselor II or III to provide prenatal genetics services. The role obtains and reviews medical, family, and pregnancy histories and constructs three-generation pedigrees for patients and families at risk for fetal anomalies or genetic diseases and syndromes. It communicates genetic risks, medical information, and testing or screening options in a non-directive, supportive, understandable manner; provides short-term supportive counseling; and facilitates informed decision-making. The counselor documents consultations and procedures, communicates findings and recommendations to referring providers, and discusses the significance of genetic test results with patients and providers. Ongoing case management includes liaising with laboratories, consulting with medical geneticists and other specialists, coordinating additional studies, and arranging follow-up appointments. The position also coordinates service delivery across clinics, including appointment templates and sample processing; contributes independently and as part of a team to prenatal genetics programs; undertakes graduate-level teaching and supervises genetic counseling interns; and enrolls patients and collects data for occasional research studies. Requirements differ by level. Both levels require graduation from an accredited genetic counseling program and a California genetic counselor license. Genetic Counselor II requires passing, or being eligible to pass, the American Board of Genetic Counseling examination. Genetic Counselor III requires board certification/documentation and five years of genetic counseling experience, as well as prior experience in a Prenatal Diagnostic Center and demonstrated expertise in prenatal genetics. Current AHA CPR licensure is also listed for Genetic Counselor III.
