About The Position

The AES Clean Energy team is seeking a Principal Generator Modeling Engineer to oversee generator models throughout the project lifecycle for its growing renewable energy portfolio, from interconnection studies through construction and operations. The role combines technical engineering expertise with leadership of engineers working in renewable energy. The position is remote, with minimal travel expected, and reports to the Manager, Generator Modeling. The engineer oversees generator modeling, validation, and compliance with ISO, NERC, Transmission Planner, and Planning Coordinator requirements. The role includes coordinating internal and external resources, directing consultants, guiding and training engineers, and improving workflows from interconnection requests through as-built models. The expected salary is $145,000–$181,050 per year, with an annual bonus. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, 401(k) eligibility, and paid time off, including vacation, sick leave, and parental leave.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
  • At least 8 years of modeling experience; the desired experience range is 8–10+ years with PSSE, PowerWorld, and/or PSLF.
  • At least 1 year of experience with electromagnetic transient (EMT) models in PSCAD.
  • Demonstrated leadership and project management experience.
  • Experience training and overseeing engineers developing and reviewing models or studies.
  • Experience with interconnection packages.
  • Excellent understanding of inverter-based technology operations and inverter settings.
  • Understanding of MOD standards and PRC-024.
  • Proficiency in reading substation and power plant controller (PPC) schematics and understanding inverter and turbine settings.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to lead technical discussions with high-voltage EPCs, power utilities, consultants, and internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to review complex analyses and develop formal documentation, technical reports, and presentations.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize projects and tasks.
  • Ability to work remotely and independently, away from an office environment or direct supervision, for extended periods.
  • Ability to gather and assess information from multiple sources, solve complex problems, manage multiple priorities and deadlines, and exercise independent judgment.
  • Personal values consistent with AES principles: Safety First, Highest Standards, and All Together.

Nice To Haves

  • Generator modeling experience is preferred.
  • Experience with Aspen for short circuit studies.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, review, and submit generator models for new and existing renewable resources for interconnection request packages, as-built submissions, ISO requirements, and NERC requirements.
  • Oversee consultant work on plant models using PSLF, PSSE, PSCAD, and Aspen.
  • Coordinate and prioritize modeling work among internal and external resources.
  • Lead team members in delivering results and improving workflows.
  • Guide engineers in model builds, verifications, data gathering, and analysis.
  • Ensure generator model builds align with Transmission Planner and Planning Coordinator expectations.
  • Ensure models meet ride-through and reactive power requirements and use reasonable parameters.
  • Supervise engineers gathering model-build data from manufacturers, contractors, and external consultants.
  • Supervise development of generator models using substation schematics, inverter and turbine settings, power plant controller behavior, and generator properties.
  • Track and implement generator model upgrades in accordance with ISO and NERC requirements.
  • Coordinate responses to Transmission Planner and Planning Coordinator modeling requests and concerns.
  • Oversee field testing for MOD-025, MOD-026, and MOD-027 model validation.
  • Guide projects under development toward compliance with MOD-025, MOD-032, MOD-026, MOD-027, and PRC-024 requirements.
