About The Position

The New Jersey State Office of Innovation (OOI) is seeking diverse and experienced team members to deploy world-class innovative and digital services that solve pressing public interest challenges for the people of New Jersey. The OOI's work spans numerous issue and policy areas, focusing on making a positive impact on the lives of New Jerseyans. Their initiatives have improved the Unemployment Insurance application process, simplified business operations, and connected residents to government programs and benefits. Team members contribute to both core project execution and the evolution of the OOI, utilizing data and modern research, design, and development methods. They collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to understand and solve challenges. This fellowship offers a unique opportunity to explore the use of generative AI in government operations, aiming to enhance service delivery and resident experience through a pilot-based approach. The fellow will work on multiple projects at various stages of development, contributing to research, engineering, evaluation, project management, user research, stakeholder communication, and reporting.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing or recently graduated from a graduate program in computer science, data science, engineering, or related disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience with developing, deploying, or evaluating digital tools involving large language models (LLMs), including through cloud-based APIs.
  • Some experience working at all levels of the development stack, including frontend web applications, backend APIs and databases, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Experience with technologies such as Python, modern JavaScript, React, CSS, HTML, JavaScript libraries and frameworks, Amazon Web Services (AWS), SQL and NoSQL document store persistence, and Git/GitHub version control.
  • Strong research skills, including breaking down complex problems, creating custom evaluation plans, performing research interviews and other qualitative data collection, and data analysis for research outputs.
  • Proven skill in tackling problems with curiosity, engaging in inquiry, and understanding user needs to develop optimal solutions.
  • Dedicated to advancing the mission of the Office of Innovation and public service.
  • Strong commitment to accessibility and fostering a more inclusive society.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the continued development and evaluation of AI products, including adding final features and integrating prototypes into agency systems.
  • Develop and execute testing plans to assess accuracy, completeness, bias, and impact on agency workflows for AI tools.
  • Conduct early-stage development work for new LLM products, such as tools for suggesting content and design revisions for readability and accessibility.
  • Create guides, demos, and communication materials about LLM use for state employees, covering tasks like translation, data analysis, and content generation.
  • Communicate project learnings through demos, written reports, and verbal presentations.
  • Contribute to research, engineering, evaluation, project management, user research, and stakeholder communication.
  • Break down complex problems, create custom evaluation plans, perform qualitative data collection (e.g., research interviews), and analyze data for research outputs.

Benefits

  • Paid, hourly wage of $20-30 per hour dependent upon experience.
