About The Position

The Generation Engineer applies in-depth technical and power plant knowledge to develop complex, multidisciplinary engineering and construction projects for implementation under the Capital Projects program, using third-party engineering and construction services. The engineer works with power plant personnel and other engineers to investigate system and component health problems and determine whether projects are needed to maintain reliability. In collaboration with plant and engineering stakeholders, the engineer develops project scope, cost, schedule, risk matrices, and justifications for Generation projects, supporting the annual Generation (non-nuclear) Capital Budget and 10-year long-range forecast. The role includes conceptualizing plant retrofit designs, coordinating with operations, maintenance, planning, Resource Planning, and Marketing, and applying engineering analysis to assess performance and address operational challenges. It also involves developing long-range plans for critical systems and components across the APS Generation fleet. The position may be filled at Engineer II, Engineer III, or Engineer Senior level, with experience requirements varying by level. This is a hybrid role. Employees are expected to work about 40% of their time in person at an APS or other non-home-office location and reside in Arizona, or in New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees. Working from home requires adequate technology and an appropriate ergonomic setup. Role types may change based on business need.

Requirements

  • Four-year bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline or related applied science discipline from an ABET-accredited institution, an International Engineering Alliance (IEA)-recognized institution, or an ABET Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) institution.
  • Engineer II: two years of experience in engineering-related positions.
  • Engineer III: five years of experience in engineering-related positions.
  • Engineer Senior: eight years of experience in engineering-related positions.
  • Approved degree fields include Materials Science/Metallurgy, Physics, Chemistry, Nuclear, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Electronics, Computer Science, Environmental, Chemical, and Structural.
  • A four-year bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology is not automatically considered equivalent to a B.S. in Engineering; the Engineering department management must review the degree program curriculum.
  • Employees are expected to reside in Arizona, or in New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees.
  • For home-office work, adequate technology and an appropriate ergonomic setup are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience in an industrial process or utility environment.
  • Professional Engineer designation.
  • Background in designing and constructing electrical systems or components for industrial use, or retrofitting electrical systems or components.
  • In-depth understanding of construction, operating, and engineering practices, safety rules, and company policies.

Responsibilities

  • Conceptualize designs for plant retrofit projects to address existing system and component issues.
  • Develop scopes, schedules, and cost estimates for capital projects for annual budget presentation.
  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, planning, and other interdisciplinary stakeholders to align project objectives and technical requirements.
  • Work with Resource Planning and Marketing to justify capital project retrofits through economic analysis and presentations to management.
  • Apply engineering methods and analysis to assess system and component performance, address operational challenges, and support decision-making.
  • Create a ten-year long-range forecast for critical systems and components throughout the APS Generation fleet.
  • Present engineering recommendations and drive decisions affecting Generation performance.
  • Develop projects that influence long-term Generation goals and objectives.
  • Present technical data and results of designs, feasibility studies, and alternatives to colleagues, management, customers, and other stakeholders.
  • Work within defined processes to solve problems with stakeholder engagement and minimal direction.
  • Establish effective technical solutions to Generation problems and provide technical bases for plant issues.
  • Develop and apply creative technical solutions to a broad range of problems.
  • Plan and coordinate resources and priorities with stakeholders to develop projects and processes of varying complexity.
  • Take initiative to remove barriers and use resources to achieve desired results.
  • Review complex engineering analyses and prepare project scopes, specifications, cost estimates, evaluations, studies, technical reviews, investigations, and verifications.
  • Prepare, check, and review non-standard analyses, evaluations, and investigations prepared by others.
  • Coordinate and provide technical direction to less experienced engineers; research new developments and technologies and align future projects with company strategy.
  • Identify potential schedule or quality problems and initiate corrective action.
  • Integrate complex project elements while complying with design, regulatory, operating, and maintenance requirements.
  • Monitor ongoing projects, capture lessons learned, and recommend modifications to improve operating and process efficiency.
