Balfour Beatty is seeking a General Superintendent in Charlotte. The ideal candidate will be a proven field leader with strong communication and coordination skills, responsible for managing all day-to-day construction activities on-site. The General Superintendent has the primary responsibility for all field operations, including the coordination of subcontractors’ work. Responsible for all field activities associated with the project, including ultimate responsibility for implementation of our Zero Harm® safety culture for the jobsite, supervision of all field construction work by subcontractors and self-performed work. Shares responsibility with the project manager for developing the project budget, actively participating in the preconstruction phase, and ensuring that the project is built on time, within budget, and according to company policies and procedures. Manages and mentors superintendents, assistant superintendents and other field personnel.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 10+ years of commercial construction field experience.
  • Strong understanding of structural, MEP, and architectural coordination.
  • Proven ability to manage site operations, safety, and schedules.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Proficiency with construction software such as Procore, Bluebeam, and Primavera P6.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience managing a wide variety of project types (ground-up, renovation, adaptive reuse projects).
  • Demonstrated success leading diverse subcontractor teams.
  • OSHA 30 certification and advanced safety training.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all day-to-day construction activities on-site.
  • Coordinate subcontractors’ work.
  • Implement Zero Harm® safety culture for the jobsite.
  • Supervise all field construction work by subcontractors and self-performed work.
  • Share responsibility with the project manager for developing the project budget.
  • Actively participate in the preconstruction phase.
  • Ensure the project is built on time, within budget, and according to company policies and procedures.
  • Manage and mentor superintendents, assistant superintendents and other field personnel.
  • Review and update progress and cost reports, schedules, and requirements for completion on a regular basis.
  • Actively participate in development and management of project’s general conditions, construction schedule, project planning/phasing, and buyout strategy during preconstruction.
  • Participate in preconstruction planning regarding the project schedule and budget.
  • Review project estimates and cost control system at the beginning of the project.
  • Communicate with subcontractors and employees a consistent level of expectations and direction regarding schedules, construction methods, company policies and procedures, permits, quality control and other performance standards.
  • Ensure all employees have relevant safety/loss prevention training for their position.
  • Participate in making scopes for subcontracts and pre-bid/post-bid meetings.
  • Thoroughly understand project specifications, the contract, and the contract’s general conditions, and confirm that all materials and subcontract work comply with contract documents and quality specifications.
  • Implement programs for EEO, risk management, training, and quality control.
  • Explore and advise the project team on appropriate changes in methods, materials schedules, and procedures.
  • Ensure all materials are properly tested according to specifications and ensure that all test results are properly recorded.
  • Ensure that project site and company assets are secure.
  • Communicate individual safety roles, responsibilities and expectations to clients, Operations staff, subcontractors, vendors, and the public to maintain a safe and respectful working environment at all times.
  • Manage and document employee and subcontractor problems or nonperformance through mentoring/training, disciplinary action, termination, back charges, or other appropriate actions.
  • Review and approve all bills for materials and subcontractor requisitions.
  • Confirm that extra charges from subcontractors/suppliers are reasonable, and work is correctly executed.
  • Coordinate with the project manager for approval on extra charges.
  • Facilitate weekly project progress and safety meetings with all subcontractor representatives and coordinate the upcoming week’s work.
  • Partner with Safety and Health Professionals assigned to the project site.
  • Attend all progress meetings with the owner/architect representatives.
  • Keep owners/architects informed of progress throughout the life of the project.
  • Ensure that the project closeout process is finalized to settle all financial obligations, demobilize all resources, and transition the project to the client.
  • Build effective relationships with customers, design team, subcontractors, suppliers, and user groups that reflect and support company core values and meets or exceeds the customer’s expectations.
  • Make presentations to proactively seek new business opportunities through relationships.
