About The Position

The General Services Technician - Unlicensed Carpenter reports to facilities management and is responsible for the fabrication, installation, and repair of carpentry-related items such as doors, windows, ceilings, and floors. The role also requires significant knowledge and recent full-time experience in preparing, decorating, and protecting interior and exterior building surfaces. Following standard operating procedures, safety norms, and regulations, the technician constructs, erects, installs, and repairs structures and fixtures using carpentry tools and adhering to local building codes.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Valid US Driver’s License
  • At least 2-3 years of similar custodial experience
  • Minimum of 7 years relevant experience as a carpenter and at least five current years working in the field.
  • Experience in general maintenance required for all duties.
  • Must be able to read and comprehend blueprints.
  • Must have working knowledge of computers in a Windows environment and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems
  • Must have effective oral and written communications skills with the ability to read, write and comprehend the English language.
  • Must be able to work professionally and tactfully with fellow employees, faculty, students and staff; deal with difficult people and / or stressful scenarios.
  • Must Maintain a professional appearance at all times and adhere to the hospital uniform policy.
  • Must be physically able to meet all job requirements.
  • Solid time management skills including the ability to multi-task, tactfully deal with unforeseen challenges and people and work well in a team setting with other technicians and trades professionals.
  • Required to work indoors and outdoors in potentially cramped space, during inclement weather year-round.

Responsibilities

  • Fabrication, installation, and repair of carpentry items including doors, windows, ceilings, and floors.
  • Preparation, decoration, and protection of interior and exterior building surfaces.
  • Construction, erection, installation, and repair of structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, and wallboard.
  • Application of all types of primers, lacquers, paints, varnish, etc.
  • Installation of doors and windows, making and installing shades, repairing furniture, and repairing/installing classroom fixtures.
  • Performing remodeling and repair work on interiors and exteriors of buildings.
  • Using hand tools and operating table saws, drill presses, and other power tools.
  • Preparing surfaces for painting using sandpaper, brushes, steel wool, scrapers, and cleaning detergents.
  • Filling nail holes, cracks, and joints with putty, plaster, or other filler.
  • Selecting premixed paint or mixing paint to specified colors.
  • Applying paint, varnish, stain, epoxies, urethanes, enamels, lacquers, or other protective coatings.
  • Carrying, setting up, and moving ladders, staging, and drop cloths.
  • Cleaning equipment and tools using solvents.
  • Cutting, shaping, and assembling wood, composition, and/or plastic sections with shop tools and equipment.
  • Assembling prepared components for various structures like chairs, desks, cabinets, bookcases, picture frames, and paneled doors.
  • Preparing structures for finish applications by planning, shaping, and sanding.
  • Reading and interpreting plans, sketches, and shop drawings for milling and fabrication.
  • Determining the type and dimensions of wood stock to be used.
  • Maintaining and cleaning equipment and work area.
  • Daily preparation of parts and tools for daily activities.
  • Completing work in a timely and workmanlike manner.
  • Coordinating work functions with fellow workers.
  • Coordinating with assigned manager for the use of non-stock hospital tools and ensuring their return.
  • Participating in hospital-wide internal training/meetings as required.
  • Maintaining and safeguarding hospital tools professionally.
  • Maintaining equipment manuals and repair records.
  • Maintaining an "in-house" inventory of parts for emergency/off-hour repairs.
  • Directing work of student workers as assigned.
  • Responding to on-call and overtime requirements as needed.
  • Performing similar or related duties as required.
  • Creating and maintaining timely and accurate maintenance logs utilizing the hospital’s continuous maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Understanding and adhering to hospital operating procedures regarding resource use, time tracking, and logging of maintenance and repair activities.
  • Performing all general maintenance duties.
  • Making rounds as assigned.
  • Planning and performing preventative maintenance schedules as assigned.
  • Troubleshooting all designated equipment and reporting problems.
  • Preparing stock orders for purchasing all maintenance supplies.
  • Painting all painted and unpainted surfaces as assigned.
  • Planning and performing construction, installation, renovation, maintenance, and repair of carpentry-related functions.
  • Setting up and cleaning meeting rooms according to specifications.
  • Collecting and disposing of trash.
  • Performing minor repairs on equipment used in performing duties.
  • Assisting and supervising outside vendors with installation, repair, and maintenance of designated equipment/systems.
  • Delivering equipment and supplies throughout the health center as instructed.
  • Responding to calls/requests for maintenance issues from staff.
  • Making regular rounds on all floors and correcting problems in the related field.
  • Performing snow and ice removal for all pathways, ramps, and sidewalks during the winter season.
  • Evaluating building and mechanical equipment periodically to determine repair needs and ensure safety, efficiency, and compliance.
  • Conferring and consulting with health center administration on equipment and preventative maintenance to recommend work orders and/or maintenance contracts.
  • Maintaining compliance with all prescribed safety procedures and encouraging others to do likewise.
  • Receiving all delivered supplies, unpacking, and storing them neatly and securely.
  • Performing functions to operate machinery/equipment, including lawn equipment and snow blowers.
  • Performing all work in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Working to maintain a safe and efficient patient-oriented environment.
  • Ensuring work areas are clean and free of debris upon completion of tasks.
