General Manager, Construction

Flex
•$275,000 - $325,000

About The Position

Flex is hiring a General Manager to build and run its construction business, owning the sector end to end: strategy, relationships and partnerships, product priorities, and the resulting P&L. The role uses Flex’s platform, balance sheet, and teams to make Flex the primary financial institution for construction businesses. It is modeled on investment-bank sector coverage: the General Manager identifies important relationships and partnerships, determines the product needs of the sector, and works alongside Flex’s product, credit, risk, and member experience teams. The role reports directly to the CEO. Construction includes contractors, specialty trades, developers, and building-products distributors, whose financial needs can involve long receivable cycles, bonding requirements, equipment and payroll spending, and advice from sureties, lenders, associations, and software vendors. The General Manager is responsible for building and managing that sector network. The General Manager is accountable for the number of construction owners banking with Flex and the revenue they generate. They will build and report on the business model, develop a sector coverage plan, originate business through direct outreach and industry events, negotiate and manage partnerships, and set product priorities for construction customers. They will initially work with existing Flex account executives, account managers, and member experience staff, and hire and lead a dedicated sector team as the pipeline grows. The role is expected to use AI-native tools for research, relationship tracking, outreach, and modeling. The position offers a base salary of $275,000–$325,000, adjusted for location and experience, plus variable compensation targeted at 100% of base and tied to sector revenue, with no ceiling. A guaranteed variable component is agreed at offer for the first year while the book is built. The role is eligible for equity compensation. Flex also offers medical, dental, and vision insurance, paid time off, and a 401(k) plan. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis until the position is filled.

Requirements

  • 7 to 12 years of experience in investment banking, private credit, private equity, venture, or a senior commercial role inside construction.
  • A demonstrable record of originating business rather than servicing it.
  • An active construction network, with the ability to identify the sector’s influential people and established relationships with many of them.
  • Fluency in contractor economics and capital needs, including margins, working capital, pay applications, retainage, bonding, and lending against these needs.
  • Ability to structure partnerships, negotiate referral economics, and work through a term sheet independently.
  • Ability to build personal financial models, with banker-level Excel skills and a working understanding of the unit economics of deposits, cards, and credit.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in fintech, banking, or lending, or experience selling a financial product to business owners.
  • Established standing in construction, such as through a podcast, newsletter, conference stage, or trade-body board seat.
  • Investing, advisory, or operating experience in a construction company.

Responsibilities

  • Own the construction sector P&L and be accountable for the number of construction owners banking with Flex and the revenue they generate.
  • Build the sector business model, report against it weekly, and answer for its performance.
  • Identify the key people and institutions in construction and develop an individual coverage plan for them.
  • Originate business by bringing owners and firms to Flex through dinners, site visits, conferences, portfolio days, and referrals.
  • Represent Flex in the construction sector and maintain an active presence in the industry.
  • Identify, negotiate, and manage partnerships such as referral programs, trade associations, franchisors, buying groups, ERP integrations, and portfolio-wide programs.
  • Set product priorities for the sector by communicating what owners require to move their primary banking relationship, in what order, and why.
  • Work with Flex’s account executives, account managers, and member experience team, then hire and lead a dedicated sector team as the pipeline grows.
  • Use or build AI-native tools for research, relationship tracking, outreach, and modeling.
