About The Position

The Professional Tree Care Co. of Berkeley is seeking a General Manager (G.M.) with experience in trades-related industries such as tree care, construction, solar, electrical contracting, or landscaping. The G.M. will oversee all aspects of the company, including accounting, human resources, and operations, ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the tree care industry, experience with high-visibility projects, and proficiency in computer systems, managerial training, and California HR, Safety, Compliance, and labor laws. Responsibilities include creating and interpreting P&L statements and training staff on CRM/Sales systems. The G.M. will report to the regional Director of Field Operations and attend various finance and leadership meetings. This role requires extensive hands-on experience in both office and field settings, with a leadership style that emphasizes mentorship and leading by example, including willingness to work the necessary hours for organizational change.

Requirements

  • Minimum 7 years of experience at the helm of a company in a TRADES-RELATED industry.
  • Minimum 2+ years overseeing accounting/finance and human resources (payroll, EDD, interviewing, hiring, PIPs, separations/terminations).
  • Being a natural leader and mentor, able to serve as “Parent Figure” with kindness, high emotional intelligence, and a team-first mentality.
  • Living within 45 minutes of our offices in Berkeley and Martinez, CA.
  • Extensive management training experience including leadership, communication, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (D.E.I.) practices.
  • Able to work from +/- 5:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and/or as needed by the CEO or workload.
  • Available to be on call, especially during fire and storm seasons.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Clean criminal background.
  • Stellar references.
  • Able to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
  • 2-year or 4-year degree.
  • Experience running a show including HR and Accounting.
  • Not living more than 45 minutes from Richmond, CA and intending to move BEFORE starting the job.
  • Developed emotional intelligence, with good conflict resolution skills, ability to handle pressure, and self-awareness of emotional influence on behavior and decisions.

  • Being bilingual English/Spanish.
  • Current or recent employment with a Bay Area tree company or municipal forestry department.
  • Proven expertise in arboriculture, crew logistics, and safety management.
  • Experience with developing inclusive workplace cultures.

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing accounting, human resources, and operational activities.
  • Ensuring jobs are completed on-time and on-budget to customers’ satisfaction.
  • Overseeing high-visibility projects within the service area (Mendocino and Monterey, CA).
  • Understanding the equipment, staff, and skillsets needed to exceed customer expectations on a wide range of project types simultaneously.
  • Being highly computer savvy.
  • Having extensive managerial training.
  • Understanding California HR, Safety, Compliance, and labor laws.
  • Being responsible for creating and interpreting P&L statements over time.
  • Being familiar enough with CRM/Sales systems (like Jobber, ArborNote, SingleOps, etc.) to train Arborists how to use it.
  • Being responsible for all functionality of a newly re-organized company.
  • Attending weekly finance meetings, quarterly leadership meetings, and annual corporate off sites.
  • Leading by example and willing to put in the hours needed to create company-wide organizational change.
  • Being on call, especially during fire and storm seasons.
