About The Position

The Town of Lantana is seeking a General Maintenance Worker to perform a range of semi-skilled to skilled tasks involving the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of Town infrastructure, facilities, parks, and rights-of-way. This role includes preventative and ongoing maintenance, landscaping, minor construction, and operation of various tools and equipment. Employees may be assigned to Public Works, Parks & Recreation, Sports Park, or Irrigation functions based on operational needs. Flexible availability, including nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency response, is required. The Town of Lantana values the service veterans and supports the hiring of returning service members and military spouses. The Town allows for hiring at a maximum rate of up to 25% above the minimum range for the position based on education, experience, valid proof of certification(s), and trainings above the minimum requirements.

Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent
Some experience in maintenance, landscaping, or related work preferred (for Maintenance Worker I)
Demonstrated experience in maintenance, construction, or related field (for Maintenance Worker II)
Valid Florida Driver’s License
Possession of a Florida Class “B” CDL (for Maintenance Worker II)
Possession of one or more of the following certifications: Public Applicator License-Right-of-ways and Ornamental Turf; Registered Flagger (American Traffic Safety Services Association); or Work Zone Traffic Control (for Maintenance Worker II)
Irrigation assignment requires specialized experience in irrigation/plumbing systems
Suitable and dependable means of communications/transportation available for emergency response
Ability to lift and/or move 50 lbs. frequently, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 lbs.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Knowledge of the operating principals of pressure, flow and capacities as related to water distribution systems (for Irrigation Technician Assignment)
Ability to troubleshoot electrical systems as related to irrigation (for Irrigation Technician Assignment)
Ability to troubleshoot and repair electric pump motors including impellers, seals, bearings, start and run capacitors, and check valves (for Irrigation Technician Assignment)
Ability to read and understand blueprints and schematics and do pipe locates (for Irrigation Technician Assignment)

Responsibilities

Performs necessary preventative and ongoing maintenance and inspections to all Town structures including; checking light fixtures, A/C filters, and playground equipment.
Renovates, improves and performs limited construction, carpentry, plumbing, and light electrical duties.
Creates and replaces street signs and operates flashing signs.
Assist with valves and clocks for irrigation systems.
Grades shell rock roads using loader or tractor.
Performs minor maintenance of equipment.
Follows safety rules and regulations of the Town including utilizing personal protection equipment.
Operates and maintains specialized equipment used specifically in the care and maintenance of all Town turf and clay athletic playing surfaces.
Completes work orders as assigned.
Plants new trees/foliage, removing dead trees/foliage, mowing, watering and trimming around municipal parks and grounds.
Cleans in and around public buildings, parks, easements, rights-of-way, and other public facilities.
Performs sidewalk and road maintenance and repairs including patching potholes and the repair of concrete and minor asphalt overlays.
Digs ditches, builds retaining walls, fills and places sandbags, and erects barricades.
Removes unwanted weeds, prunes, and evaluates the condition of plants; mulches as needed.
Inspects play area surfaces and amenities in accordance with proper regulations and standards.
Prepares and inspects parks and grounds for special events, insuring they are properly groomed, presentable, and safe.
Assist with eleven special events by decorating, event setup and breakdown, and performing tasks during the event.
Maintains and repairs damaged or missing street signage.
Removes dead animals and graffiti.
Performs maintenance of athletic fields and sports park common areas, including grooming surfaces; removing and installing bases; edging; replenishing clay; mowing; weed eating; applying herbicides and pesticides; filling holes; installing sod; fertilizing and aerating turf; trimming trees and shrubbery; removing debris and litter; pulling weeds; inspecting park grounds; maintaining irrigation systems; and repairing or replacing basketball and batting cage nets.
Prepares baseball and soccer fields for play by maintaining proper field conditions and exact dimensions; cleans and maintains restroom facilities; and services trash receptacles as needed.
Interfaces with the public and makes determinations regarding unacceptable behavior, theft or vandalism causing unsafe or destructive conditions to grounds and facilities.
Performs maintenance, installation, dismantling, and repair tasks on a variety of irrigation, mechanical, and electronic system components, e.g. pumps, drive motors, check valves, sprinkler heads, piping systems, hydraulics, earth excavation, etc.
Works from developed plans to prepare ground for layout of pipes or to reach damaged pipes.
Works in the modification of irrigation systems within the Town, including assembly of pipes, valves, timing devices, program controllers, and other related hardware and software.
Monitors and performs adjustments on all the Town’s systems as needed to ensure proper turf and landscaping control.
Programs automated systems according to established watering schedule.
Keeps logs of all activities at each irrigation system.
