About The Position

The General Maintenance Technician II, Controls Apprentice reports to the Senior Director for Physical Plant Maintenance (MEP Systems) and supports the Controls Shop by assisting with building automation systems (BAS), HVAC controls, and related electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic systems within assigned facilities. This position is an apprenticeship role that provides structured, on-the-job training under the guidance of experienced controls technicians and requires participation in and successful completion of assigned training modules. Under supervision, the apprentice supports the installation, startup, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of control systems, including direct digital controls (DDC) and pneumatic systems. The position contributes to maintaining proper temperature, humidity, airflow, and indoor air quality while developing skills in system diagnostics, basic control logic, and schematic interpretation. This is a required personnel position that necessitates the employee’s physical presence in the workplace. The employee must also report to or remain at work during university emergencies or closures and maintain a valid driver’s license that is insurable under the University’s insurance policy.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED and a minimum of (2) years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Pre-employment physical exam required.
  • Valid driver's license required and must be insurable by the University's insurance carrier.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine inspections, report building system issues to the supervisor, and generate work orders as needed.
  • Under supervision, assist with the installation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC DDC (Direct Digital Control) systems, including thermostats, sensors, controllers, and actuators.
  • Startup support, testing, basic commissioning, and preventative maintenance activities for building control systems.
  • Assist with system modifications and upgrades to building automation systems, including reading and interpreting control diagrams, wiring schematics, and manufacturer instructions, and monitoring system performance through user interfaces to identify and report abnormalities or alarms under the direction of senior technicians.
  • Assist with downloading, updating, and verifying software for building automation systems.
  • Assist with point-to-point checkouts to ensure field devices communicate with the front-end server.
  • Complete all assigned training modules and apprenticeship requirements to support skill development.
  • Operating knowledge of Microsoft Office software, and working proficiency with handheld computers (i.e., smartphones, iPads).
  • Accurately complete daily white cards documenting assigned work activities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
