About The Position

The City of Olathe is seeking qualified candidates for General Fleet Maintenance Technician I–IV positions to help maintain the vehicles and equipment that support essential City services. This work helps keep fleet assets safe, reliable, and ready for service. In municipal fleet maintenance, your work has a direct impact every day. You are not just repairing vehicles and equipment—you are helping keep public works, utilities, parks, facilities, and other essential City services operating safely and reliably for the community. Positions may be filled at the I, II, III, or IV level depending on the selected candidate’s experience, training, certifications, and demonstrated ability. While core duties are generally consistent across levels, the complexity of work, degree of independent judgment, and minimum qualifications increase with each level. Placement within the technician level structure will be based on a combination of related experience, technical training, certifications, approved equivalent credentials, and demonstrated ability to perform the work at the expected level of independence.

Requirements

Valid driver’s license with a favorable driving record
Ability to obtain a Kansas Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements within six months of hire as a condition of continued employment, if required by assignment
DOT medical certificate within the required timeframe, if required by assignment
Air conditioning and refrigerant recovery/recycling certification at hire or within a specified period after hire, depending on assignment
High school diploma or GED required for all levels.
General Fleet Maintenance Technician I: 0 to 2 years of related experience. Related vocational or technical training may substitute for some experience or be considered qualifying preparation.
General Fleet Maintenance Technician II: 2 to 4 years of related experience. Related vocational or technical training preferred.
General Fleet Maintenance Technician III: 4 to 6 years of related experience in fleet, automotive, or equipment maintenance. Technical training and job-related certifications preferred.
General Fleet Maintenance Technician IV: 6 or more years of progressively responsible related experience, including complex diagnostics and repair work. Advanced technical training and certifications strongly preferred.

Nice To Haves

ASE certifications or other related industry certifications
Experience diagnosing and repairing electrical systems
Experience with preventive maintenance and repair of passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks, and fleet equipment
Experience using scan tools, diagnostic software, and computerized maintenance systems
Related vocational or technical training preferred for Technician II.
Technical training and job-related certifications preferred for Technician III.
Advanced technical training and certifications strongly preferred for Technician IV.

Responsibilities

Perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repair of the City’s passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks, vans, and other assigned fleet units that support daily municipal operations and essential City services.
Conduct inspections, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical, electrical, brake, steering, suspension, air conditioning, and drivetrain systems.
