About The Position

The General Cleaner is responsible for performing a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings and facilities to maintain a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition. This role involves detailed cleaning tasks for various areas including common areas, food courts, and restrooms, as well as grounds care. The position also requires good customer relations and adherence to safety standards.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic operations of janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals (per MSDS sheets).
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Sufficient communication skills to interact with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
  • Ability to interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate for assigned duties, including walking, standing or sitting for extended periods, operating equipment, lifting/carrying 1-30 lbs, pushing/pulling with force, climbing stairs and ladders, bending/twisting/balancing, kneeling/crouching/crawling, reaching/handling/grasping/fingering, and overhead reaching.
  • Adequate sight for performing cleaning tasks and maintaining safety standards, including depth perception and hand-eye coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Perform high dusting using a treated high duster, starting in a counter-clockwise direction around the room, cleaning surfaces above shoulder height.
  • Sanitize and spot clean surfaces below shoulder height using a germicidal solution, removing fingerprints and smudges from surfaces and spot cleaning windows.
  • Clean bathrooms using a germicidal solution, including sinks, toilets (inside and out), and checking/refilling soap and paper dispensers.
  • Empty trash cans, replacing liners and cleaning cans if necessary.
  • Dust mop or vacuum floors using the "S" stroke, ensuring all furniture and restroom areas are covered, and cleaning mop heads as needed.
  • Perform grounds care by cleaning outside areas, emptying ash urns and trash cans, policing sidewalks and flower beds for trash, spot cleaning spills, removing gum, wiping benches and vending machines, wiping lower window ledges, dusting for dust and cobwebs, cleaning public area glass, and policing the parking lot.
  • Clean public common areas, including dust mopping and spot mopping main hallways, cleaning glass, cleaning planters, and performing high dusting of window areas at least twice a week.
  • Clean, remove trash, and sanitize tables in the food court, place chairs back, spot clean spills, empty and clean trash cans, remove dirty trays to the washroom for cleaning, and police outside eating areas.
  • Sanitize floors using the proper germicidal solution, starting at the back of the room and mopping under furniture and behind doors.
  • Conduct self-inspections after cleaning to ensure all steps are completed and furniture is properly placed.
  • Perform daily cleaning of halls, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, furniture, and wall spotting, along with high dusting.
  • Engage in customer relations by knocking before entering occupied rooms, being friendly and cheerful, answering questions courteously or referring to a supervisor, reporting broken items, working quietly, staying in the assigned area, and maintaining a neat personal appearance.
  • Report to the supervisor if work assignments are not completed by the end of the shift.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, which may include floor care tasks such as stripping and waxing floors, carpet extraction and bonneting, and auto scrubbing and buffing floors.
