About The Position

The General Cleaner will perform a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings/facilities, keeping them in a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition. This role also involves performing other tasks related to the area of assignment.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of janitorial work operations.
  • Basic knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
  • Basic knowledge of safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals (per MSDS sheets).
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Sufficient communication skills to interact with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
  • Ability to interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to walk, stand or sit for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to operate powered and non-powered equipment.
  • Ability to lift/carry 1-30 lbs. of equipment, supplies, trash.
  • Ability to push/pull, using both hands and arms while performing cleaning duties, exerting 5-35 lbs force.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders while cleaning upper areas, drapes.
  • Ability to bend/twist/balance at waist, knees, neck throughout shift.
  • Ability to kneel/crouch/crawl while cleaning lower areas, retrieving supplies from lower shelves.
  • Ability to reach, handle, grasp and finger while operating equipment, using hand and power tools, wiping and cleaning surfaces and using cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to perform overhead reaching throughout shift.
  • Adequate sight for performing cleaning tasks and maintaining safety standards, including depth perception and hand-eye coordination.
  • Maintain a clean and neat personal appearance.

  • Floor care – stripping and waxing floors, extraction and bonneting of carpets, auto scrub and buffing of floors.

Responsibilities

  • Perform high dusting using a treated high duster, cleaning surfaces above shoulder height.
  • Sanitize and spot clean surfaces below shoulder height, including ledges, chairs, telephones, countertops, and trash cans.
  • Spot clean windows using the proper solution.
  • Clean bathrooms, including sinks, toilets, and dispensers, using germicidal solutions.
  • Empty trash cans, replacing liners and cleaning cans as needed.
  • Dust mop or vacuum floors using appropriate techniques and equipment.
  • Perform grounds care, including cleaning ash urns and trash cans, policing sidewalks and parking lots for trash, spot cleaning spills, removing gum, wiping benches and vending machines, and high dusting for dust and cobwebs.
  • Clean and spot mop main hallways, ensuring glass is cleaned, planters are clean, and high dusting is performed.
  • Clean, remove trash, and sanitize tables in the food court, and clean trays.
  • Sanitize floors using the proper germicidal solution, working from the back of the room.
  • Conduct self-inspections after cleaning to ensure all steps are completed and furniture is properly placed.
  • Perform daily cleaning of halls, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, furniture, and walls, including high dusting.
  • Interact with customers in a friendly and courteous manner, answering questions or referring them to the appropriate person.
  • Report any broken or out-of-order items to the supervisor.
  • Work quietly and maintain a clean and neat personal appearance.
  • Report to the supervisor if work assignments are not completed by the end of the shift.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, which may include floor care such as stripping and waxing, carpet extraction and bonneting, and auto scrubbing and buffing.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly condition of assigned buildings/facilities.
