About The Position

The General Cleaner is responsible for performing a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings/facilities to maintain a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition. This role involves detailed cleaning tasks in various areas, including high dusting, sanitizing surfaces, bathroom cleaning, trash removal, floor care, and grounds maintenance. The position also requires excellent customer service skills, adherence to safety practices, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team. Additional duties may include floor care such as stripping, waxing, carpet extraction, and auto scrubbing.

Requirements

• Knowledge of basic operations of janitorial work.
• Knowledge of basic methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
• Knowledge of basic safe work practices.
• Knowledge of the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals (per MSDS sheets).
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Sufficient communication skills to interact with co-workers and supervisors.
• Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
• Ability to interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
• Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
• Ability to walk, stand or sit for extended periods of time.
• Ability to lift/carry 1-30 lbs. of equipment, supplies, trash.
• Ability to push/pull, using both hands and arms while performing cleaning duties, exerting 5-35 lbs force.
• Ability to climb stairs and ladders while cleaning upper areas and drapes.
• Ability to bend/twist/balance at waist, knees, neck throughout shift.
• Ability to kneel/crouch/crawl while cleaning lower areas and retrieving supplies.
• Ability to reach, handle, grasp and finger while operating equipment and cleaning surfaces.
• Ability to perform overhead reaching throughout the shift.
• Ability to use sight for cleaning tasks and maintaining safety standards, including depth perception and hand-eye coordination.

• Experience with floor care – stripping and waxing floors, extraction and bonneting of carpets, auto scrub and buffing of floors.

Responsibilities

• Perform high dusting using a treated high duster, cleaning surfaces above shoulder height.
• Sanitize and spot clean surfaces below shoulder height, including ledges, chairs, telephones, countertops, and trash cans.
• Spot clean windows and remove fingerprints and smudges from surfaces.
• Clean and sanitize bathrooms, including sinks, toilets, and dispensers, ensuring they are refilled as needed.
• Empty trash cans, replace liners, and clean cans if necessary.
• Dust mop or vacuum floors using the appropriate techniques and equipment, ensuring all areas under furniture are cleaned.
• Perform grounds care, including emptying and cleaning ash urns and trash cans, policing sidewalks and parking lots for trash, spot cleaning spills, removing gum, wiping down benches and vending machines, and high dusting exterior areas.
• Clean public common areas, including dust mopping and spot mopping hallways, cleaning glass, maintaining planters, and performing high dusting of window areas.
• Clean, remove trash, and sanitize tables in the food court, spot clean spills, and clean accumulated dirty trays.
• Sanitize floors using the proper germicidal solution, starting from the back of the room and working towards the exit.
• Visually inspect cleaned areas to ensure all tasks are completed and furniture is properly placed.
• Perform daily cleaning of halls, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, furniture, and walls, including spotting and high dusting.
• Interact with customers in a friendly and courteous manner, answering questions or referring them to the appropriate person.
• Report any broken or out-of-order items to the supervisor.
• Work quietly and maintain a neat personal appearance.
• Report to the supervisor if work assignments are not completed by the end of the shift.
• Perform other duties as assigned, which may include floor care (stripping, waxing, extraction, auto scrubbing, buffing) and carpet care.
